What are the specs of that vps ? if it's not the internet speed then might be ram. But don't expect everything as home computer.

1GB of RAM and you expect the process not to be "slow" ?

If you face the issue even when there is nothing running, the problem isn't coming from the RAM but the IOPS on the amazon server generating a hard drive latency slowing down everything.
I wouldn't be surprised if for their free VPS, they increase the VPS density on a per RAID array / SAN storage basis or you have very busy neighbors.
You should bring the issue to them so they can investigate.

Ouch, that would be trickier to get it solved as there isn't much you can do on your end.
They might solve as they are more likely monitoring it.

You can maybe find out if you are moved if you go for a paid solution.

Oh and another issue that could create the issue you are facing is the latency you have to the VPS .
If you are far away, it can create the very same issue where everything is slow (ping your VPS IP to find out, if >250 ms then it is possible it is the reason)

Free and overloaded server can't run smoothly.

Purchase a VPS from another good provider. Amazon is over-seller.

You are using a free VPS and you are not satisfied with the speed? Perhaps you should consider actually paying for VPSes.

Check how much of that 1GB RAM is being used. For everything to run smoothly you'll need a generous percentage available. Consider upgrading to at least 2GB of RAM if you have the funds.

It is not the issue of your VPS. I think your PC is slow. Can you please share the specifications of your PC?? Your processor is slow, you should upgrade it.

What about the load in the VPS, i mean the cpu usage and the memory usage. Check it and kill the unwanted process that is running in the VPS.
Sometimes if you use more than one anti viruses in your VPS then it cause the VPS slagging. If nothing is prob from your end, then it might be some issue in the provider end.
Because some hosting provider placed more number of VPS in a single hardware node and due to which VPS become slow even if you good specification..

If process and system is slow, it indirectly means the VPS is slow, how do you differentiate these things?

After watching the specification and features of your system, I am sure nothing is wrong with your VPS. Actually, your processor is old or slow.
