A few months ago I had a site deindexed from google because it contained copyrighted material. It was basically a site where you could watch movies for free. I targeted a certain keyword and was ranking pretty well when BAM! got hit with a google penalty. I've been trying to figure out a way where I could build a site and it not get deindexed. I know it's possible because I see a lot of sites in the top 10 of google where you can watch movies/ tv shows for free. Why and how is this possible? Anybody have an idea??

Perhaps it's cloaking it's content, or using other magic and wizardry to conceal its wares.

Were you hosting the content as a lot of movie sites don't actually host the files they pull it from other domains.

No I didn't host the content, I redirected to other sites that hosted the content.
Example is primewire. It's not a warez site

Well, life is not always fair. ;) There could be many different keys they used for site selection that got deindexed, not just the 'which sites are ranking for keywords you target' criteria.

I never said anything about it being unfair. I just would like to know why so I can do better in the future. If you don't have any valuable answers to give then why even respond?
Yes I did do several searches. I even searched this forum but haven't found an answer. It could be that no one knows but I figured I might as well ask and someone might have a logical answer.
