I'm trying and to some degree ranking a couple sites for main keywords but oddly enough the inner pages with LESS (or no) content then my homepages are ranking.

My homepages on the other hand is never to be found anywhere other then searching my domains directly in the serps or using site: domain

I'm really new to SEO and this is something I've always wondered about.

One thing to note is that I have 6 direct competitors aiming for these keywords.

    Much appreciated,

    Zenno

Your home page has probably been penalized, while your inner pages were not slapped.

Connect your site to webmasters tools and you will see if there is a manual penalty.

    Home Page:
Agreed that if you cannot find your homepage even with site:domain.com or whatever then it has probably been penalised and your sub pages have not.

It would be a good idea to connect it to webmaster tools and look for any messages.
Also perhaps get an ahrefs report for your site and see if any links or other metrics stand out as being particularly low quality on the homepage.

Aside from that though, if sub-pages are ranking for your keywords then its not all bad is it?

This happens quite normally. It depends on the way in which you built the anchor text to your website homepage. I have experienced this before and it's totally normal. But how many % of links do your inner page push to your homepage?

Do you use various but related anchor text?

My advice is this: Don't 301 redirect that ranking inner page to the homepage, just build links from most of your inner pages to your homepage or try the Silo link building.

    Best of lucks.

To be honest I haven't intentionally built any backlinks....

This whole SEO business is hocus pocus to me but its making me an easy $50 a day without any work.

I wish I could talk to someone about all this one on one. I might try and PM t0mmy once I get enough posts under my belt.

DO NOT DO ANYTHING TO YOUR SITE.

Leave it as it is. $50/day is a good income. Build another site and do all types of monkey things that you may want to do.

And please do yourself a favour... do NOT talk anything about your site with anyone! Lock your secret in a locker and throw the key in the sea :)

There is nothing unusual about this if your site is well structured. In time your overall site can build up a reputation as an authority site, but generally to do that you will use a mix of backlinks and/or content on your site. Your inner pages are generally the ones where you are posting your high quality content ... this is targeted stuff, so it can rank for keywords your main site has not been ranked for ... particularly if you have backlinks going to the inner pages, but not to the top level of your domain.

This can easily be a situation where G is still trying to make sense of exactly what your overall site is about, but completely understands many of your inner pages intended functions in the world.

If you're making $50 a day off of it, I'm not seeing any problem! How is it monetized, Adsense?

I've seen this happen before on my sites as well. My theory is that Google uses lantent symantic indexing to categorize the value of the page itself to a consumer. An article post for example, may have more valuable content even if it has less keywords. Its a weird phenomenon but it does happen. Sometimes better to use these pages to convert traffic.
