Why is posting in very old threads such a bad thing on forums?

What is it with posting in old threads that had no reply in months or even years such a bad thing to do on Internet forums. Members, moderators and admins on any site usually freak out whenever someone does it even if it still has some relevancy. I can understand when people do it to promote a product or ask the OP something even though the OP may not have been online in years. But for a post with new information why does it really matter to post in an open thread vs start a new one?

Because 99% of the time it offers no value. The thread is old and buried because the discussion died. Why talk about it again?

If new information comes along or suddenly its relevant, bump if. But 99% of the time this just isn't the fucking case.

Same reason I don't dig my asshole for snacks; by the time a thread dies, it's been turned to shit through by the carefully constructed digestive system known as trollation.

I Agree with your words. I think the thread creator has rights to Bump his own thread, if in case he can't able to get the right answer. Otherwise bumping an old thread would be worthless.

In addition to what Ste said, there's also the issue of members responding to the old thread and giving advice to an OP that hasn't logged on in over 5 years.

There are old threads that are routinely bumped because there's a new angle or people just want to pile onto a thread they're still enjoying *cough* muscleteen *cough*

Necrobumping is more annoying than anything because they clog up the forum and push more relevant threads further down. My favourite bumps are the 5+ year old responses to a banned op saying "WTB - I need this urgently"

Basically, any excuse to bust out another zombie gif...

When was the last time anyone saw a twist/angle or even a decent question on a necro bump?

All you get is post count upping or - site:blackhatworld.com "my niche - I'm trying to sell" - type of posts...

This would be less of an issue, if the fucking "Similar Threads" down below, sorted by date first, before relevancy. I've gone full necro only to realize I was graveclicking. An example, I'm going to go reply to one from 2009. It's about popular threads on forums.

This is why it's important to put stuff like this on the forum feedback section. We're migrating to a platform with a huge amount of flexibility which gives us the ability to implement new features more easily so suggestions like this are always valuable.

I wouldn't say it was a thriller, just a little bad maybe?

On a serious note, should I wait until the migration of the site to make the suggestion, or go do it on this platform now?

On BHW most of it seems to be bots that are bumping old threads.

You can dig up dead people as long as they have been dead for a few thousand years.
