Well according to the SEOquake toolbar they are a PR 6 domain that is 9 years old with 1200 indexed pages that has 6000 links to the homepaga and 24k links total. According to majestic seo they have 180k links and 7400 referring domains, some of their links are coming from Radio shack, emergingmed and other high authority domains.

I too compete with them on certain topics and I have decided to keep adding content to my site. Its kind of the same reason wikipedia shows up for almost everything, they are a trusted authority on the subject.

Livestrong is a classic example of a next generation content mill. The people behind Livestrong are Demand Media, who are the people behind eHow and a bunch of other content mill type sites and have millions and millions of dollars. Strong focus on keyword and market research, slick design and aggressive link building... The formula for a real authority site, and not the kind of crap that most people are talking about when they say they're going to build an "authority" site.

Livestrong also has Lance Armstrong's money behind it in some regard. Basically the site just has a huge budget, plus the brand building opportunities that Armstrong's Livestrong foundation brings to the table.

I like the fact that only truely qualified experts write the articles which is exactly how it should be. I also like the actual livestrong website, if you're a bodybuilder or like to keep an eye on your macronutrients then livestrong is one of the best places out there, this great added link bait which works both ways. They do keyword research very well, then writers choose a keyword that they would like to write about.
