A few minutes ago I opened a thread asking Why is it important to go to college/university? and I believe I should restructure the question to:

Why is it important to go to college/university... for us in IM/business/entrepreneurship?

I understand that people that dont want or have a business or don't have an entrepreneurial mindset go to uni/college to have a degree and then a job of some kind.

But for the people that want to build a long term business or that have an entrepreneurial mindset, which I believe a lot of bhw members have, why would a reason to go to uni/college be?

I'm open to all replies :)

1 word: networking. Starting any business alone can be daunting, but if you can start a career in Internet marketing and get a few people interested, then it becomes a little easier. Having someone manage SEO while another person blogs and another person handles the web development can not only speed up time significantly, but the quality of the results could possibly be much higher than if a person did this work all by themselves.

Now, I'm sure you're wondering why they don't just look outside of a college setting to find like-minded individuals, and the answer to that is simple: they're less likely to find these individuals. In some communities, this isn't possible because there aren't any meetup groups in the area, and in some cases they cannot start one as most of the people in their city are older or not interested in Internet-based work.

Additionally, there are a few other reasons where an entrepreneur would seek to attend an accreditation institution. For example, some people may also go to get some insight on business or money management that they may have missed when they were teaching themselves about those topics.

While I don't personally care for any of these reasons myself, I understand why someone would do it. In the end, all that matters is what works for you and what you think is the best decision. If you did your research and you think attending a college would make a significant impact on your business, then I say go for it.

With a more straight forward question my friend, I have a slightly different answer.

It still is a plan B. But, some people treat you differently if you have a degree or not. When you take on clients, some people will dismiss you due to a lack of a degree. This is more true with older clients. The piece of paper may make or break it for them.

For example, you call a company to do SEO / Rep Management. They ask if you are qualified. You cite rankings and past clients. Another guy comes along, with a degree, and referrals as well. For some clients, they will not care or understand you ranked the KW 'Pay Day Loans' for 12 months. They do not understand SEO. They do understand the other guy went to a school they recognize and due to that, they trust him.

This is just how people work. In the past I was turned down promotions due to not having a degree yet. I also was not selected for jobs (When poaching clients) for work because they had a guy who had a degree in the field, so they assumed he knew more.

That little piece of paper can go a long way. It could make some IM easier when it comes to clients. Do you need it? I would argue that people who have an actual business and physical address would have a larger impact on a client than someone who has a degree. One could argue, most likely correctly, client referrals are more important. But if you want to play it big and have the time, the degree can be something to put you over the top.

This would be the difference between people who do not want to work at McDonalds so go to IM and people who want to build a real business. If your clients prefer someone with a degree, do not disqualify yourself by not having one. Although my little degree in History does me no good what so ever. I find that people who work more with high profile clients in Advertising / Marketing have more utility for a degree.

You could use it to increase prices you charge clients since you have a degree and they would trust you more. You could get a degree to get a job so you can have a nice good income and do IM either through automation or on the side on your time off.

I.M knowledge is a specific knowledge for you in business and making money.

And you still need another knowledge in school and college like math, biology, history etc, for you not to become totally stupid.

For me it is important to finish my university in order to get rid off my student loan.
That is basically the only reason i am finishing it as im already delving into IM for myself and my brother anyway.

This!!! You cannot learn everything on the Internet - well technically you can in today's world, but you just won't. Making money is important, but getting general knowledge on most things is even more important.

Also, the college years are going to be the most beautiful years of your life. It's an experience like no other. Making money is not everything in life. If everyone here is thinking of dropping college, don't! Enjoy the time while you can.

I have about 1000 answers why. So if I list 1 answer, that would degrade the true college experience. Which is much more than education and networking.

However, I will also say this. I went to 2 colleges. The 1st was a local college. The second was a private university. And the differences between the 2 were night and day. If I stopped my education at the shittier local college, I might argue that you don't need college.

    But that's not what happened.

My main aim is networking and building my social life. After all, when you study and do IM, you might end up being the only richest student in school making your own money.

It is important to go to college or university so you can learn much more things that can be implemented in the work you are doing. Also it can be an alternative to your business plan. If your business fail than you can find a job with you degree. The university or college is a place where you can learn many useful things.

But you can still get a good paying job without a degree so you can save up and restart IM again. A professional diploma or a certificate can be obtained faster and cheaper than getting a degree.

    Agree.

Everyone is saying things like connections or getting more experience/knowledge, but let's be honest... is there an "IM" category in uni/collage? Not really. At best you can opt-in to learn programming. In my opinion spending 4 years in uni will bring you a lot less IM related knowledge than spending 4 years on forums like BHW.

I personally also had the same idea when I started my uni experience. I thought I'd be able to meet a lot of like-minded people and create good connections, but by the end of my second year I had a complete understanding that, that was ridiculous to even think of. Let's face it. Probably 95% of the people that go to uni/collage are going there with the idea to get better education(certificate) in order to find better job. There are barely any individuals that have knowledge to IM or think of pursing that type of "career" or even think that it's possible to earn from "the internet".

In my opinion these are the main pros and cons:

    Pros
    - you will have vast knowledge on different subjects beside IM/computer stuff.
    - you will probably find some decent friends in there.
    - uni is fun if you are generally good at studying.

    Cons
    - it's time consuming.
    - costs money(usually a lot).
    - it's stressful if you aren't good at studying.

Note: My personal experience is from a uni standpoint. I have no idea what is the difference between collages/uni in other countries, but in my country collages experience is similar to going to extra lessons to get a certificate/prepare for exam. It can't even be compared to uni.

I am currently about to begin my first year at one of the top 10 MBA colleges in the U.S.

My newly acquired life goal is to do IM, but I still feel that college is necessary for numerous reasons, at least for me.
    1. Meeting like minded individuals.
    2. Having a backup plan incase IM fails, a degree from a prestigious university can land you a job.
    3. Programming knowledge that I will gain.
    4. Access to a startup like culture with investors available.
    5. The experience of going to college

EDIT: This is just my opinion, and why I chose to goto school. I also am very good at studying and test taking, so ideally I will be able to spend lots of time on IM while in college.

IM is not anything complicated its just marketing things online. You don't have to make connections with only marketers, you make connections with people in a variety of different industries.

    Actually, funny thing about that...
    http://www.franklin.edu/internet-marketing-bachelors-degree-program
    http://www.fullsail.edu/degrees/online/internet-marketing-bachelors
    http://www.snhu.edu/online-degrees/masters/mba-online/mba-in-internet-marketing

But I agree with what you said about Internet-based resources like Black Hat World being more useful than college for Internet marketing (I'm honestly surprised there is a degree for it). Now, don't mistake this post or my other post as being pro-college as anyone who read my post on Royserpa's other thread as well as my numerous posts on this forum that are against the idea of college would know that I don't like it for myself, but I know why some people feel the need to go. Of course, there are also others who barely have an Internet connection/no Internet connection at all and have no choice but to go to college as IM is not feasible.

Your understanding of IM is very small.
Did you ever worked on big automatisation projects ?Or real mass projects ?Which programer are known for doing the best piece of software and working very quick ?Russians and chinese and why do you think its so ?Because they are home learners ?
Average indian standard is far far away from chinese or russian standard and thats because of education.
There are also more points to it like business structur.Take a look at the owner of skrill Bongartz. He started in the garage of a friend of mine with adult in germany and because of his great economic knowledge he first started administrating adultwebmasters and later opened moneybookers. There are many example like him.German webmasters are well known for their great business and most sucessfull german webmasters had a good education even as engine engineer but the knowledge how to work on any topic how to gather themself knowledge about a wanted topic is key .
Have a look at bhw and 90% of noobs here. They are not able to learn themself. They basicly need to ask question. Its not to ask about questions in general cause this can safe time but asking easy questions shows that the member isnt able to find and process information himself.Thats something which needs to be learned
