Why has my domain not be relinquished by the registrar yet? Grace period?

So i have an account i no longer use with namecheap and was going to let the domains expire but the account has a delinquent balance that my friend caused it to get locked. therefore the domains have seem to be getting renewed further past the grace period i think as the whois data says it has been extended another year, yet i haven't paid for it nor did i leave any billing info for them to bill. What gives? Does it just say in the whois info that it got renewed a year even though it could be in the 4 week grace period? Does anyone know what could have happened? My stupid friend decided to chargeback after buying services on my namecheap account causing it to go into negatives. Would namecheap waste their time renewing my domains in attempt to think i would buy them back?
