Why has a high pagerank edu link not given much of a boost in the SERPS?

    Title says it all,

I got knocked off the number 1 spot a month or so ago because i got lazy with my linkbuilding, i was down to number 8 or 9 at one point, so I started link building again and came across a pagerank 6 edu link. It hasn't been spammed at all, in fact its not even a blog. It has around 20 other outgoing links to non spam sites, these are official legit sites.

Google has definetly indexed the page since because when i search for it and checked the 'cached' version my link is in there.

So anyway this seems to have had 0 effect on my ranking since im still hovering around position 5 or 6 now. I was kind of under the impression that a pr6 edu link would hold a lot of power, any thoughts?

is your link a do follow? 1 high PR is not enough to hit #1 most of the time and it takes continuous link building

Profile backlink right? Well you don't expect only edu to give you good SERPs, everything requires work.

Is the actually page where your link can be found a PR6 page? Or is the root domain PR6? Either way, 1 link is nice, and may eventually contribute to you gaining the top spot again, but not enough right now apparently.

lol, i'm not a newbie, this isn't a 'lousy' backlink, its pagerank 6 (the page, not the domain) with only a few obl's, all of which are legit and non spam domains. It's not a profile link, a blog or any of that, no other blackhatter has discovered it or doesn't know how to get their link on there.

Bear in mind I've done a lot of backlinking before this, I guess I was just expecting a bit more a push from it.

    Thanks for the comments.

PR 7's can have a good effect and quick, but these too can only give a boost for a few weeks. One PR6 backlink may help with a long tail keyword but not a main keyword. When I aim to get onto the first page I'm looking at 50 PR6's and perhaps 8 weeks as they get recognized organically.
If your keyword is competing with other sites that have a competent backlinker working on their site, you'll be hard pressed to stay in the race...
Yet... If you put the effort in the rewards will come.
    Hope that helps

From my experience I haven't found the PR to make a huge difference in rankings. I've gained some good high PR links in the past with very few OBLs and seen very little movement in SERPs.

1 link regardless of it being high PR isn't going to do it. It might be a bit different if it were a high trafficked page with a lot of activity. The SERP algorithm is not what it was a year ago. The weight put on high PR backlinks has dramatically dropped.

One link won't necessarily raise SERP on their own, bro. If it did, we'd all have PR 9000 websites. But a linkwheel including a few hundred .edus may help :]

It will have helped but not that much!

Go get 10 or so of them and you may see a bigger improvement but just 1 alone won't have much effect. Plus it depends on how much more SEO your competitors have done now?

its probably a nofollow link would be my guess. i havent found edu links to do that much for me compared to .com links but if its on a PR 6 page, it should have made a noticeable difference if it wasnt nofollow

When it comes to any relatively competitive keyword these days there's no substitute for relevance. .edu links definitely help with domain trust, but when it comes to making a difference in the top 10 you're not going to inflate your position easily with a single link unless it's really, really relevant.

Edit: As far as PR goes it's a good indicator but it's even less important than trust. The days of simply getting high PR and putting up keyword rich content are over, and doing the same thing with domain trust has become a lot less effective than it once was.
