Manuel Neuer - The Sweeper-Keeper - More than just goalkeeper
Overrated as fuck. During the world cup he barely had any saves because of the nice controlling team he has. Also during the knock-out matches where he played as "a defender" he didn't even do anything special, beside kicking the ball away when it approaches him. Tim Howard (USA Goalkeeper) Had more saves in his match against Nederlands, than Manuel Neuer had the whole worldcup.... (Im not american just to make it clear).
I think courtous is an awsm keeper
Indeed he is,world cup was amazing
^Indeed, much more important for his team, and also for Atl. Madrid
A lot of that was showboating and he left his goal exposed so many times it was ridiculous - it was pure luck that a lot of those clips didn't end up with him conceding a stupid goal.
I like Neuer. He plays GK and sweeper. I like his competitiveness. I at times don't like his attitude because he sort of leans into forwards that slow down and hit them, but his attitude is that of an enforcer. He's a true-blue jock, and he helped win the Cup, so he's going to be more semi-unbearable but will improve his game because now pride and ego are on the line in a big way.
He understands the geometry pretty darn well. Many times when he seems out of place, he's put himself on a spot in the field that makes him "bigger" to the striker on the other team, especially at distance. It's a good thing he's tall because a lot of shots could be lofted over him, but it's worked pretty well so far.
Like I said, I do like him, and at the same time am a bit bothered by how he behaves, but I think he can develop and change the position of GK. He's got the idea, build, athleticism, and attitude. Let's watch.
Tim Howard tho. oh Tim, you gallant warrior, we love you. Thank You for helping USMNFT bow out gracefully.
best 6 goal keepers in world cup 2014:
Manuel Neuer (Germany)
Keylor Navas (Costa Rica)
Guillermo Ochoa (Mexico)
Hugo Lloris (France)
David Ospina (Colombia)
Rais M'Bolhi (Algeria)
UH. 7. Tim Howard (USA)
I hope Ochoa finds a quality team. I think everyone digs Ochoa.
GKs have really stepped up in importance and leadership. Changing the game.
whoever supporting Tim Howard (USA)
had you watched all the other USA matches in World cup ? and his performance on those matches?
or watched only that quarter final Record braking match? its just a good day for him
It was the US - Germany game that made me see weakness in the Germans.
And, sure, downplay his single-handed performance against Belgium. Whatever you need.
Remember when Algeria scored on Neuer? Did you see that match? Neuer even committed a foul.
Even Brazil scored on Neuer.
I would'nt judge Neuer on just the world cup, he does it weekly for Bayern Munich. Hes an unbelievable weapon to have and a new evolution of goalkeeper. He turns defence into attack immediately and with stunning precision.
It's so much fun to watch him scoop the ball and quickly hurl it midfield for the attack. They know what to do and they take the initiative so well.
The German National Team are fortunate to have so many players who play together throughout the year, their solidarity and teamwork were excellent.
Then you look at teams like Chelsea...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chelsea_fc#First_team_squad . They could use some more English..
Neuer is goal keeper and at the same time a sweeper. Through this he is often able to clear situations before they get dangerous and his skills as a "pure" goal keeper are often not needed. This causes some people saying "he's not that good" etc. when in reality he is a genius. A comparison: the best cop is not the one shooting the biggest gun most often but the one being able to defuse the situation before violence even arises.
He also has a very secure aura that often frightens the opponents (not as much as Oliver Kahn used to do though ) and gives confidence to his defenders.
