Just curious, I've got a brand new site (about 3 weeks old) with a fair amount of content on it. In webmaster tools, it shows 22 URLS/18 indexed, and every day, there are more impressions and I see various search terms appearing on average as low as position 1 and 4.0. However, when I search for the same terms manually, I'm never there.

Where do you belong? May be your site ranking in US and you are viewing the result from some other country? Also, clear your browser cache and cookies before searching (make sure you are logged out), because google does give you personalized results based on what you have searched and clicked so far...

Not sure where I belong. It's a very low competition keyword on my main piece. my competitors have low PA, lousy title relevance and most have no backlinks at all. I assumed I would be on the first page due to content alone.

If it helps, I was checking using a firefox private window.

Hmm then it is kinda strange. You are using incognito window right? If you are using incognito, then google should not track cookie..
May be your site is new and dancing around. Wait for it to settle down.. Give it a month or so. WMT generally gives me pretty accurate results, but I do have the same problem with new sites..

It is happening because your keywords are getting ranked in some other country and you are searching those keywords in some other country.
    Eg.:
You write a post on Samsung S4 but you are not in top 100 results in Google.com. Apparently you are ranking on 20th spot for Google.co.uk.
So you will see the impressions in webmasters tool but you will not find your site in Google.com.

It happens because doesn't provide county-wise impressions.

Google will display different rankings for different people depending on their location, Google circles, etc.

Google Webmaster Tools displays the number of impressions your website has received at that ranking...it doesn't mean that your website is currently ranking at that position for everyone in the world/country/state/city.

So if you got 4 impressions at rank #1, it means that somewhere in the world your website ranked #1 to four people, but to the other 5,000 people that searched for the same term, your website didn't rank high enough to receive any impressions.

If you have 20 impressions at rank #4 it means that Google showed your website at ranking number 4 to 20 different people in the world.

When you start getting a lot of impressions at a particular ranking, like enough where Google calculates the CTR for you, then go and look for your site at that position.

Also, when searching for your site don't go to Google.com and search from there. Use Google's Ad Preview Tool: https://adwords.google.com/d/AdPreview/

This tool doesn't cause you to accrue impressions, doesn't display personalized results, and allows you to specify what city you want to view the results for.

By the way, do try quoting your keyword if you didn't (e.g. "iPhone 5" instead of iPhone 5)

Weird, when I use quotation marks, I am on the 3rd page. If I don't use quotation marks, who knows where I am.

So, basically, quite worrying about what GWT says. right? I'm just excited. This is my third site, the last two I didn't have a firm grasp for choosing low competition keywords but this one I think is going to be really nice. From what I've read, with good content you can rank without links but most times, it takes 60-90 days before you'll have a solid ranking. But, naturally, I'm checking GWT every day looking for changes and, checking my ranking every day in long tail pro.

    This one's GOT TO WORK!
