Why does the SERP page go from millions of results to under 200?

    I'm used to Google acting a bit weird now and then. I've always seen it promise millions of results for any search and then it only shows you a thousand results.

    I've never it seen do this for a search that should be popular.

    The search URL is: google.com/search?q=wordpress+plugins&num=100&espv=2&ei=PCrBWN7tJMjHmQGg47uYAw&start=100&sa=N&biw=1536&bih=702

    That's the number of results I should be seeing.

    Any idea what gives? Strangely if I search for "WordPress plugins" it only shows 104 results.

    It`s the same on my side, and I`d say it`s quite common (when it ends up with 20 results pages while Google promised 1.000.000 results initially.) Google says itself that it has filtered the most relevant ones for you and hidden the very similar ones under so-called 'substitute', see:
