Why does someone want to buy my $14/month website for $500 on Flippa?

    Hey everyone,

So, one of my sites got hit by Penguin back in April 2012 and I just held on to it because why not? It still made between $15-$40 a month with Bing, Yahoo, AOL traffic. The site has made $15-$40 every month since April 2012. The last 3-4 months it has only made around $15 though. Monetization is Adsense.

I've decided to start a new venture so I put the Penguin penalized site on Flippa with a starting bid of 100, a reserve of 101 and a buy it now of 500. I'm not a scammer so I even put in the listing that it was penalized...
Today I got a BIY offer of $500. Why on earth would anyone want a site making 15-40 bucks a month and penalized by Penguin for $500? Even at the high end of $40, the 40 X 10 math is only $400!

The listing has 11 days left for bids and I've heard most bids come rolling in on the last day. Should I take the 500 and run or wait it out? Thoughts? This is my first sale on Flippa.

    Thanks everyone!

Could be that they've figured out the "fix" for whatever caused your Panda hit and will be able to correct what went wrong.

It was Penguin not Panda. I was under the impression that it's absolutely impossible to recover from Penguin without being a big brand... Even if you did remove all the backlinks. Hmm. People really get out of Penguin without being a big brand?? The site is an EMD and borderline spammy... though the articles were all given some love by me and they're not THAT bad.

I think it would be a good idea for you to work on fixing your site first. You might be onto something someone more experienced can see.

I'd probably recover it and continue to make money off of it. If you're making that much money now with it penalized, you should be able to at least multiply that by 4 once it's out of the whole.

The reason why I say this is because I'm usually the type of person that likes to MAKE SURE something is a loss before I just deem it a loss. Tough times are going to come, but it's the ones who push through a little bit longer that reach the top.

How the hell do you recover from Penguin. Penguin is based on backlink anchor text as I understand. I can't get the shit links removed... it's impossible. I guess I could build more links and vary the anchor text but that seems like a stretch for such a low performing site....

Flippa is full of time-wasters so make sure they are serious before accepting the offer or you will waste a lot of time. Sounds like a reasonable offer, though.

Multiples (contrary to popular opinion) are irrelevant at this end of the market. They might be paying $500 because that's how much it would cost them to replicate the site or they might have other sites in the niche. IMO if you think it's a good offer and the buyer is serious, take the offer. Don't waste a week holding out for the chance of a few more dollars.

    1. he could be a noob knowing nothing.
    2. he is the guy who think that a site has a price of 3 year revenue. (when u buy a big site, u have to pay that amount)
    3. he is seeing great opportunity with your site.

Just sell him the site and run away with the money.

Another opinion is the domain name is worth money to the buyer. I've seen a few buyers that could care less about the site, they just wanted the domain name.

Word of caution here as it sounds like you're new. Don't push the domain for at least 30 days unless the buyer has incredible feedback. You might find out in a week or two the guy used a stolen credit card to fund the purchase.

I've asked myself this question quite a few times. Some people just fucking love flippa - usually they're online noobs with a bunch of money.
I once had a client who was seriously addicted to buying junk on flippa. He'd see the claim for "HUGE" potential, a decent domain, a coded website (which he would usually be paying much more for) and for some reason it added up to be worth it in his head. The guy used to spend a solid $10k / month on flippa - despite my warnings to slow down and search for stuff that WASN'T just some crappy wp site with some articles and some uniques for like $200.

Anyway.. just take the money and go.

People buy sites for different reasons and to some people $500 is not a lot of money. You did advertise it at a buy it now price for $500 so in my opinion you should sell it.

If they bought it for that much, they either love your site and have to have it, or think they can pull more money out of it than you.

Thanks for all the help everyone. I sold it at the BIY and everything went smoothly. I guess he thinks he can recover from Penguin. I say good luck to him.... not my problem anymore lol. On to bigger and better things. Hard to let go sometimes, but I feel this was for the best. Thanks everyone.

Take the money and run. Penalized websites are a hassle.
