I don't have a captcha form on my email capture form - but out of interest, what is the purpose of a rogue spam bot getting dud spam emails to sign up on peoples forms - what good does that do to them or us?

    Eh?

The bots are simply programmed to fill out forms. It is trying to create a link on your website it doesn't know the email just gets added to a database. It is of no use to either of you but the software is just doing what it's told to.

Nope it shouldn't matter if you send them emails. Just a waste of a sent email but you can use different methods to refine your email list. I would recommend adding a very basic captcha or renaming the field ids/names. Just so long as you don't reduce conversion rate.

  5. Have you emailed them back? They may have autoresponders set up that email you various offers.
