It seems counter-intuitive to connect through gmail or other google services, because if google runs an internal data mining operation they can easily put up a target, or at least make the service work less effectively. Isn't this kind of obvious why do so many service providers do this?

Yeah. Google has nothing better to do than run internal operations hunting down blackhatters.
    Yeah right..........
The webspam team doesnt work with the Gmail team. They are different departments. They probably dont even know the names of the guys who work in Gmail.

Dont be so paranoid. Its a myth and it won't happen. They would choose much better ways if they were to fight spam.

It's not about hunting down, it's about improving their business model by getting data from you.

In a way, google want these SEO services to run. Because competition means quality.

You do realize that if Google were to read your emails, they would be going against the law, right?

If that's not what you meant, please elaborate; 'internal data mining operation' as in crawl for anchors such as SEO and then what? Any form of personal investigation would again be illegal (privacy).

google bots scan through your docs and visit all links, cache images... just google for "The Google attack: How I attacked myself using Google Spreadsheets and I ramped up a $1000 bandwidth bill".

I don't know if google further analyzes crawled links and images, but I wouldn't trust them with sensitive SEO related data.

I dont know how many have agree with this but i have noticed the type of advertisements are totally depended on your inbox content.

like if someone mentions hosting or domains or shopping i get ads related to it in my gmail and google ads....

there seem to be bots who are going for particular keywords in emails....

even microsoft launched an aggressive attack for this , to seize the opportunity of course..and google replied we do not 'manually' read your emails.

Hello mmaniac, I've read the article just now but you've confused me.
The article is about Google's feedfetcher bot crawling Amazon's servers for images repeatedly because the feed crawler shan't store data or cache anything as it could be private information. It shouldn't have crawled the servers that much and this guy got caught in a crawler loop, costing loads of bandwith.

Google spreadsheets can be set to both public or by email invite. The writer never said it wasn't set to public OR was at any point. Wouldn't you agree that a spreadsheet that can be set to public is different than a personal email? Whether or not Google actually crawls email is debatable. Keep in mind that even though you or your company owns a piece of software or hardware, the user data is still private and must be treated as such. For example: if you are a programmer and your boss asks you to hack into the companies own server, there's a good chance that is illegal, despite the fact that the company owns the servers.

Going through email to target specific users in their search engine spam prevention I find hard to believe. I mean...how? Note that the EMAIL anti-spam filter is a completely different story.
