They all show to be coming out of new york on some websites yet on others they show different states in the US.

I mean that every single IP will show new york on one of the websites and a random US state on another website. Why is this?

The answer is pretty simple: apparently those sites don't work from the same ip address database. Which one is the most accurate? Hard to tell. Sometimes you can even get US proxies identified as Canadian proxies.

    Agreed with @HoNeYBiRD

    To Add,

There are a lot of services a company can use to try determining the location of an IP address. For example, one commonly used company is MaxMind:

    https://www.maxmind.com/en/home

There are many other companies and they all may determine location differently. One other reason that the location may jump around is because IP blocks are constantly being bought, sold, repatriated, etc. Databases can quickly go out of date. If a company is using a service and just caches their results, or they're using a service that is inaccurate or not up-to-date, then this can account for most of the variance you'll see.

Because most of the sites people use to check IP location are ad-supported, I wouldn't be surprised if most of them are using lower-tier location services, or just plain scraping whatever data they can find about the IP. Hope this helps :).

Your best bet then would be to pay a geo location service for access to their database, or find a tool that states they use one of the better companies like MaxMind. That's about as accurate as you're going to get.

    Ok this is stupid...

The same website which worked a few minutes ago was blocking action due to geo location when I tried again a couple mins later with the SAME proxy!

There are a lot of reasons this might happen. They might be using a firewall service that watches for bad IPs. For instance, Google will block well-known public proxies a lot faster than most other proxies simply because the history of abuse. So, your first request gets through fine, but subsequent ones may be blocked.

Other possibilities include that your proxy may not be elite, meaning that it might be leaking your actual IP, or at least passing headers letting the site know you're using a proxy.

Another problem might be the proxy itself. Maybe it went down, or it's just getting hit hard and isn't letting all connections through.

Like I said, lots of possibilities for a proxy to work sporadically.
