Why do large profiles private their accounts?

Okay so I am a relative newbie to the instagram game and I noticed that large profiles often go private and then unprivate.
I'm not sure if it is like a technique to get more followers or not but can someone provide some insight on why they do it?

I think they do it when they get shoutouts, cause so many big profiles say "QUICK FOLLOW THEM BEFORE THEY GO PRIVATE" then they go private for like 10 minutes, LOL idk, im a noob too.

My thought:

1.) They post to a popular page saying: I'm doing a giveaway! Check out my latest post.
2.) In their BIO they put: ''Tag me 5x on a popular page to be accepted'' (with private account)
3.) People tag em, they get more exposure, everyone requests, they accept all eventually and finish their fake giveaway.

Good method tho.

So you have to follow them to see what's on their page. Great technique. They usually do it during sfs and stuff.

some people also do this because they think they have a higher follow back rate, as people are intrigued and want to see what's on their account and something forget to unfollow
