If you have a blog with lots of posts will that make up for it? I'm finding all these marketing companies ranking that have like nothing on their homepage besides images.

I'd venture to say there's likely low local competition. Possibly an old domain with little to no transfer of ownership.

Good links too, probably. It seems that content isn't nearly as important as some of the other ranking factors.

Simple. Either they have a big name, and/or have tons of other traffic, and/or they have tons of quality inner page content, and/or they simply have killer links and/or it is a really easy keyword niche. Take your pick(s). There are Fortune 500 companies with homepages similar to what you describe, guess why they rank.

Old aged companies with a good trace receiving a lot of referrals from different sources, and a quality link building.

Plenty of internal and external links to those homepages, I suppose.

Indeed. If Google sees that people flock to your site voluntarily they give you more authority so to speak. And if people choose you in the SERPS over other results you get more authority. It shows that people are actively seeking your site out. Google LOVES that.

Been there, done that. Used to work. I gamed Google for almost two years on that tactic years ago... they are wise to it now and you'd need to get VERY tricky to fool Google into thinking it was real people. They probably only look at Chrome users, and likely weight it based on if they're logged into a reputable Google account while the search and who else knows. Simple proxy based click bots, and click exchanges don't work anymore based on my experience.
