Why can't I rank for any keywords on my site other than those in my url?

    I've had my niche site for about 3-4 months now. I'm on page one for my url keyword phrase, but I have 4-5 other keywords I want to rank for. I have been making a bunch of backlinks with the whole anchor text thing but Google just won't rank those outside keywords.

    The one thing I was wondering (since I would say that I am a noob) was about my meta tags. I went to edit them yesterday and under my title I noticed. <meta name="description" content="digitalnature.ro" />

    (I'm using a WP theme^)

    I changed it back to my keywords and description, but could this be a main reason why I can't rank?

    No, the common solution to this is to build EVEN MORE backlinks. Sometimes G takes ages to update.

    well, some might disagree but I still belive having proper meta tags - especially title and desc is pretty important.

    Besides Peter73 is right, keep on building QUALITY backlinks and you should be fine - I also have noticed G taking sometimes long time to rank you. Sites / pages keywords I ranked up very quickly I usually dropped down even faster, but the ones it me few months to climb up stay up. :)

    On the side note: make sure to interlink within your site, make reference with your other keywords as anchor from other posts - sitewide links like side menu or footer usually don't bring same weight as a direct anchored link from another page/post

    just my 2 cents, I am sure some will disagree

    Edit: make sure to mix up your backlinks as well eg - some from profile backlinks, social bookmarkings, ads, and comments

    Don't give up.
    all best

    Meta description is important... At least my experience says that so I use them.

    @OP If keyword is in url then it will be little easier to rank in comparison to keywords which are not in url... It adds bonus for ranking for particular keyword but it's not mandatory and I have ranked lots of times for keywords which were not in url so keep building links and you will see them in ranking sooner or later.

    You might try adding some additional pages that have the keywords in the url. That will help. yoursite.com/newkeyword

    The tags do matter, I have moved a keywords ranking doing nothing but changing the tags. You are telling Google what your site is about and what you think is important. Are they the most important thing? No, but they do matter.

    It's a very gooooood reason for you not ranking !!!

    Also, lots of wordpress themes use wrong H1 and H2 tags. Tons of themes have :
    H1 = your blog title (on ALL PAGES)
    H2 = your post / page title

    Some years ago it wasn't the proper way to do things. I have this setup on my mini sites and yes I mostly rank for my URL keywords (but I don't give a f*ck as this keyword is at least 90+% of the traffic I could get If i was also ranking for the inner pages).
    I'm still convinced it's not the right way to use H1/H2 but I didn't really took the time to change them...

    Cheers;

    Well thanks everyone for your inputs. I appreciate all your help and I have made at least one sale from the site in the months that I had it up so I am determined not to give up.
