    I migrated my blogger blog to WordPress last week, and since then i have noticed i received so many spam comments daily. I am talking about receiving like 20-30 comments per day, with most of them containing links to other websites and foreign language. I am using the free version of akismet which has been helping me but i am now getting worried.

    What else can i do to stop this?

    Get a anti-spam plugin most people will recommend Clean Talk which is a great plugin it's not completely free, but you do get a free trial. Regardless if you're working with WordPress and especially if you're working with WordPress using a contact us plugin you're going to need anti spam plugins.

    They're simply trying to get a backlink. You can use a blacklist to reduce the amount of spam you're getting.

    the comments are spam because of the website textbox. people use to find WordPress websites to create backlinks. you can uncheck Allow people to post comments on new articles to disable the comment or there is another way to do this :) you can create a child theme and add this code to functions.php
    PHP:
    add_filter('comment_form_default_fields''unset_url_field');
    function
    unset_url_field($fields){
        if(isset(
    $fields['url']))
           unset(
    $fields['url']);
           return
    $fields;
    }
    the following code will remove the website textbox in the comment session, so if the user is using any software to find wordpress websites to create backlings he/she will not able to find your website.
    after adding this code activate the child theme :)
    now you will not receive any spammy comments.
    I have this on all my websites and i don't receive any spam comments
    trust me and try it

    Thanks so much, i really appreciate. Can i add the code directly to my main theme function.php file since my current theme doesn't have a child theme?

    Search for "security" in the plugins section and choose one of the top 3. Security plugins often have options for spam comments to block them or things like adding captcha to the comments' form in case you don't want to disable comments.

    yes you can directly add this code to the main theme functions.php but when you update your theme the code will automatically be removed, creating a wordpress child theme is very easy
    just follow this guide https://developer.wordpress.org/themes/advanced-topics/child-themes/
    you can create any child theme of Wordpress by following this guide

    I always just turn off comments, and if I really need a comment section I use Disqus.

    Same, I disable all comments by default; WordPress footprints are a way to spammed to death.

    I'd recommend to get anti spam plugin, or just simply disable comments

    OP had already mentioned it's currently in use.
    I'd also suggest to keep comments disabled.
