Why are so many SERP checking tools so inaccurate and/or so expensive?

I'm seeing a bulk of serp checking tools that are EXTREMELY unreliable in ranking. Many of them are also too poorly made to get past request limits for Yahoo or Google. And the rest, that are fairly reliable, are quite over priced. $100 a month for something that I could probably have a programmer build in a couple months seems a bit much. Why is this niche not being taken over by somebody who actually KNOWS how to program and who realizes people hate monthly fee's?

I just posted about rank tracker, here's the post:

    http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/black-hat-seo/466418-where-can-i-get-serp-rank-graph-showing-rankings.html#post4512405

It's reliable and it's $120 per year or something. They gotta charge because it always needs updating.

Also note that rankings are different from different datacenters, nothing you can do about it.

SERPFOX.com > * Only one I've liked so far, plus it's dead on even for local searches..

You can't really get a dead on 100% accurate rank tracker. The ones I am using are MicrositeMasters and SerpBuddy and MSM beats it all the way.

another vote for ranktracker from seo powersuite. It's shared here, but if you pay the $120 it saves and graphs your info, which is the most valuable feature for me.

SerpFox wasn't accurate for me. Nice interface, etc... but the rankings were nowhere near what I got when I manually checked. And no ability to add a zipcode for locational rankings.

Serpfox results are not correct at the moment.
    Even the support says this.

Support does not say this. This was a response to your query about a specific domain which was affected by this issue. It was never intended to be construed as an indicator of a system wide issue. The majority of ranks are not affected.

Are you sure? All of mine are.. I did a manual check and they were mostly perfect, some maybe 1-3 spots off.. These have a local city keyword in them so not sure if that effects it. Anyways, it's been the only one out of many tested that works for my local keywords. Saw someone post about the zip codes above, that sounds incredible need to look into that..

Traffic Travis is Free, and more reliable than most of the shit out there... Though the free version is slightly limited, for a few sites and a few keywords you can't go wrong.

SerpFox depicted the most ridiculous rankings for me. They weren't even close to even a little bit accurate. And, this was months ago.

@OP - I think the monthly fee is a necessity due to the fact there is a lot of upkeep (proxies, etc.). I would love to see a one-time fee online SERP checker, however, the quality would probably be lacking or it would be an extremely expensive one time price.

The results are off a lot because Google has different datacenters. I don't think there is a service that can completely avoid this issue. I like to use a combination of SerpBook, RankTracker, and manual checks. I rely on manual checks the most because they are the most accurate (obviously). SerpBook is the best online ranktracker I have tried and I really like their Alerts feature. I'd recommend trying them out if you haven't already.
