Check out this article from Slate that explains some reasons restaurant websites are bad. It makes sense if you ask me, but we should capitalize on these weaknesses in our offline marketing.

This is my favorite quote from it since I do mobile websites, and did not know the official stat. This is from the the head marketer of OpenTable:

This quote also stands out because this is the exact pitch I use when I come across a flash website.

The article can be found here: http://www.slate.com/id/2301228/pagenum/all/#p2

The article is pretty long so here are some key excerpts:

    What do you guys think?

I think a lot of restaraunt websites are made by a waitress, the boss gives her a shift to put a couple paragraphs and a menu up and she volunteers because she learned how to use frontpage in middle school in like 2000 or some shit.

Lol, at least the bar is set pretty low for us. I have a method I just came up with that I am going to test with this article and I will tell you guys about it. I am going to send a very simple email from my personal email address to 100 restaurant owners, just a variation of the following:

What do you guys think. Any tweaks? Any guesses on the response rate? Over/unders? Bets?

If you are looking to get their business be more direct; tell them that their site is not functioning on a mobile device and that you are a "mobile device website expert" and would like to show them how to get things set up for the current times.

Mobile phone internet is not the future it is the now and Mr/Mrs restaurant owner needs to know that and you can not only be the messenger but you can be the conduit for them to be in the now.

Some Restaurants tend to want a web presence just to have one but don't really understand the benefits of onsite (I'm talking customer usability) SEO. I think they see a site as a way of maintaining a good image as opposed to another facet of their total business plan. A website can be much more than an "online roadside billboard" Heck a FaceBook page would help these guys more than some of these sites do.

Many restaurants still depend on old media. If they practiced lead capturing they could build a list and recycle customers. I think if you could explain to them all the money they leave on the table and all the profit they could make on the back-end it would really change their thinking.

Realistically restaurants are often notoriously, slammed busy or un-busy with tight manpower and budget. They are really a task to own and manage and some decision makers don't really look at having online identity as an innovative way to increase profit and customer service. That's my take on it..........

I think its not only restaurants but its about heightend awareness,
I recently had to look into hundreds of photographer websites, and it was not pretty. It almost seemd that someone in the country there must be a single spot where all photographer go to get a website done or get tips on how a website should be done, it ends that most of those website have running background music, unbelievable complicated flash navigation and huge pictures all over the place without context (about all the SEO issues i am not even going to start...

Regardless of the reason, there are multiple demographics besides restaurants that are definitely in need of new websites. You'd think by 2011 that these guys would have something better, but I guess fortunately for us they do not. We just need to capitalize on the reasons they do not and try to help them out...
