I hit 23K followers a month ago & feel like I've plateaued. I've always done follow / unfollow, but I feel like I'm at a point now where I should just "grow".

When doing follow / unfollow I'm getting 200+ new followers a day - and they generally stick when I start unfollowing. I don't see a mass exodus. When I stop follow / unfollow, I'm lucky to get 10 followers a day?!?

General photography niche - landscapes, buildings, etc.

I've been around here long enough now to know the first thing that'll come out of your mouths: content. Okay, I'm a pretty good photographer in my own right, but let's see. For the past two weeks I've posted nothing but gallery quality photos I've downloaded from Pixabay. Guess what? They get the same number of likes & comments as my photos. AND I'm only getting 10 new followers a day.

Captions. I've tried funny captions; inspirational captions; deep thought captions. Engagement always stays consistent.

Hashtags. I generally use tags in the 500k - 1M range & would say that I'm in the top posts on those tags about 80% of the time most any given day.

Engagement on my part: I reply to EVERY SINGLE COMMENT that is left on my photos. I go out & like hundreds of photos a day & comment on hundreds, too.

My theory, which seems to be backed up by my Instagram insights, is that I'm not being seen. Why would that be? According to my insights, my top post in the past week (which was Pixabay artwork) had a reach of 2099 & engagement of 1782.

What's going on here? Why am I unable to grow organically??

I am around 6 thousand at the moment, and I have the same feelings. If I don't touch, I grow around 10 followers each day, which means. If I would be 4 times bigger like you, it would be around 40 followers.

Could that be because there are now too much accounts to follow, so due to high competitions, the follow rates are decreasing ?

    Some crucial information missing here:
How many likes do you average per post?

We're sort of stuck here too. We're at about 15K now and usually grow 5-20 follows per day if we don't do anything except post. Our posts get between 150 - 400 likes depending on the content. Most average about 280 though.

How do you see the "reach" and "engagement" of a post. Thanks!

1500 - which I'm very happy with. Some people will say that's "low", but I can show you pages of world famous photographers with more followers than me who get less likes on average.

Instagram Insights. I won't explain it here, but you can find plenty of info by searching the boards.

When I started last year, the general idea was that once your account grew, you would see a "snowball" effect without much effort besides the usual. That's most certainly not the case now.

You cannot post the same old, same old. Even if it is good content, HQ, unique, etc. If it doesn't make people talk, or want to tag others, the reach will be very limited. It needs to create an emotional response of some kind.

Fear is a big one. People also like things that are very cute, or remind them of love or tender feelings for animals.

One a few of your posts start to go viral or semi-viral (at least 100% more engagement) you'll notice your follower numbers increase. Organically, without methods like follow/unfollow. Engagement groups can help with this too.

Go to other accounts in your niche (travel/photography/nature) and see what's going viral on their accounts and try it out on yours. I can give you some examples via PM.

I am getting this problem too. I've around 13k followers with 1000-2000 likes per pic but when it's time to unfollow I just get around 10 followers per day.

IG is totally controlling what everybody sees in their feeds. If IG doesn't want you to be in people's feeds, then people don't see you and you don't grow, there is nothing you can do. You can post tomorrows lottery numbers everyday and you will not gain followers if IG does not want to promote your images. Content doesn't mean anything, it's all about if IG likes you.

The trick is to find out why IG doesn not like you and try to make them like your content. Obviously that involves many things.

Finally, not all accounts will work. Some are just not interesting, or they are too similar to other accounts and people don't follow.

So basically you need two things to succeed.

    1) Content that will make people FOLLOW. Not just like, it has to make them want to FOLLOW.

    2) Get IG to like you and your content so if forces it on people whether they want it or not.

Honestly, the above two things are the best advice on this whole forum.

Haha, that's the million dollar question. We sort of know what IG likes and doesn't like. We also now know that IG "shadow bans" accounts and limits their reach and there is no way to tell when that happens.

I also think that IG has essentially "shut the door" and what I mean by that is at first, the door was wide open, anyone was allowed to get a huge account. Now the dust has settled and they have effectively shut the door because it's time to start making money off of everyone who wants to get exposure but can no longer do so organically.

While I wish you were able to provide a concise answer to #2, ;);) I thank you for writing one of the most well reasoned responses I've ever seen around here.
