Why am I ranking #1 for a 3 word search term?

Ok, so i'm delighted to be on the first page, first result on Google for a 3 word search term. Previously I was at around 5/6th position on page 1 but noticed a considerable spike in traffic the moment I got to #1 (resulting in 8 conversions within two days)

I'm trying to understand what factors are really applicable that made my page to move to position 1.

    About the keyword:
Not much search volume (both in broad/exact/phrase match)
    390,000 results
Siteexplorer shows 5 backlinks to this page
The first two words in the 3 words has around 40k global searches
There is about 1% keyword density in my page/article (word count 409)

    Here is what I did:

    1. I made a usual article on my site.
    2. Submited to various social bookmarking sites (to be more specific, StumbleUpon, Digg, Reddit, Delicious)
    3. Made 5 press releases, of which three got approved, widepr, prlog, pitchengine
    4. Bookmarked the 3 PRs as well.
    5. Did a few scrapebox comment blasts of which i'd assume around 50 - 100 stuck.
    6. Got hold of a list of second rung PR sites, submited to perhaps 2.

Besides the above, I use the SEO booster pro and have assigned search words to tags only twice.

    And thats about it.

Also what I can ensure to stay in this place (besides continuing to build backlinks + article submissions), because the next 5 results are from big sites such as Yahoo news and some of the premium/paid PR sites.

What is the exact search volume for the keyword? You said it is low but I am curious how low. That could very well be the reason you are #1. There is not a lot of competition for low low volume keywords so a few links might be all you need.

You probably dont realize but that is a lot of work for a micro niche keyword.. genrally if the search volume is below 2-5k a month we get there in less than 1/10th of that work!

Low for me is 2-5k what is it for you?

2600 Global search volume when set to 'exact'

Did a check in Yahoo, i'm in #5 (the Yahoo news and few big PR sites seem to gobble up the first 4 spots).

Just did an article submission and planning to getting the URLs pinged + a few more scrapebox comments to these submitted articles just in case.

I can't afford paid PR submissions. Maybe I wont be in the #1 spot for long but it does give me a high (even for two days) to see other big wallet websites rank lower.

What do the statistics for the rest of your site look like? Index count? DA? How does your homepage rank for your main keyword(s)? Backlink count? Do you have multiple pages ranking highly?

The rest of the site actually fairs decent enough. On average the site ranks within first 2 pages of Google for over 50% of the keywords and in some cases even #1. But considering that this position is #1 that even beats the merchant that I promote is what intrigues me.

PS: On further research, I discovered that I had done a DIGG promotion via minuteworkers. Not much but just 46 diggs. Could this have been a factor in ranking?

Hopefully i'll be able to answer this question as I plan to do a test shortly for another keyword that I rank #11 presently
