    Hi,

I have a website, and was wondering if anyone knew why it ranked 38 in yahoo, yet nowhere to be found in google, is that common?

I also have one which has 2 pages in the Top 10 in yahoo, but in google its 150!

    Any help would be awesome

    Kind Regards,
    Rob

Two totally different search engines. They are nothing alike in how they rank sites. Both companies have different algorithms they use when ranking.

They have similar jet very different ranking algos...
Google is much into quality, relevant, trust, and authority backlinks
Yahoo is much into onpage factors and number of backlinks, not much based on trust or authority, but lately they focus on relevance as well

If you want to have god SERP's on G, than you must build some quality in content and relevant backlinks pointing to your site...

I have a site I used to work on that sold storm shutters. I had six words ranked in the top ten on all three engines. I got done with the project but watch the stats of the site over the last six months to see how everything stuck. 2 months ago another seo firm took over the seo for the site and after they paid the submission costs to the yahoo directory there rankings started falling off of google. Now they are now longer in the top ten pages. There is a correlation between paid inclusion and yahoo finding you naturally. This is not just a one off shoot. I have done it for 3 other clients and the results are the same. So I don't know if you paid to be included in the directory I would not as it has a negative affect. Just wanted to share some of my observations.

How new are the domains? It's not unusual in some sectors to see almost no results from Google for 8 months due to the sandbox effect. Yahoo on the other hand may happily list you highly as soon as it's aware of you.

Ahh that's a point, the domains are very new..perhaps they are sandboxed then, but I've only built perhaps 150 links over a few weeks., didn't think it was that much

You have to keep in mind that MSN is going to pick-up and rank your sites first, Yahoo! second, and Google is always last on the list. They use different criteria to rank as well, and if you're a new site then good luck in avoiding the sandbox. Getting "Google Links" will also help your rankings on the Big G.

I suspect it's keywords in the domain. I have a site, with a keyword rich domain, that on Google is on page one for some terms and top 2-5 for others. Where as Yahoo, i completely own the niche. I'm results 1-3, on the first page for almost every keyword i'm targetting. There's very few backlinks by the way.

I actually wrote about my experience's here if anyone's interested. :)

the url and keword in domain is more considered than the quality or backlinks on yahoo. Thats why it must have happened.

And even blogspot pages make it to top in yahoo if you name it with some buzz keyword.

This is the official definition of the sandbox effect. Keep building links and you will get a good Google rank eventually (1-3 months)

The answer in simple that the algorithms are different. Usually when ranking for a keyword in Yahoo or Bing the title tag and domain URL is considered. If you have the matching terms the possible chances of getting ranked are high. But Google they go through quality content.

Also i went through Webmasters Central Videos and remember Matt Cutts referring in some point about Keyword Density. I think to rank well in Google

    • Have a good Keyword density, dont bother if people say it's keyword stuffing and you get penalised. That is bullshit !
    • Formatted text and Header tags can carry greater value
These are just the On-page factor you should go through in your articles. Keep in mind it is the Off-page factor that is very important to any search engines when ranking. Some tips:

    • Avoid links from sites that are rated bad, like Porn sites. This could get you into bad neighborhood.
    • Don't bother about Do Follow or No follow. It is said even No follow links passes link juice.
    • Maintain a steady rate of link building practice and never over do it.
    • Edu and Gov links gives a nitro boost in your ranking.
Some of these Off-Page optimisation tips could really help you in ranking.

    Cheers
    Rav
