So what idiot, years back, decided that 400 words was the gold standard of content? I browse through services and advice here and elsewhere and you bump into that number time and time again. A word of advice, this number is not based on any inside information that some guru has on Google. And frankly I feel constantly posting content around 400 words is a major SEO footprint. My advice would be stop counting words and start striving for better quality.

After the first Panda, everyone started doing this if I remember correctly. The change in submission guideline on popular article directories made this go viral?

If you spend billions on adwords your articles can have 4, 40, 400 or 4000 words in any order you want, stuffed with as much gibberish as you want, and it'll still rank.

I always recommend that people make their articles as long as they have to for them to get their point across. If it only takes 300 words, then leave it at 300 words. If it takes 1,000 words for you to get your point across, then leave your article at 1,000 words. I see no reason to add fluff to an article under 400 words to make it 400 words. It just makes it more conspicuous that you're optimising for search engines and not for your audience.

500 words is equivalent to one page of double spaced type.

If I can at write at least that much content I don't bother.

for the same blog, i have some 300-400 words articles who are on the first page of GG, as well some 800-1000 words who are somewhere in pages 10 and above lol

2 months i am testing this each time.....

checking some serp today i saw one article in my niche with maybe 150 words !!!!!

so now the 800-1000 words articles i am going to divide them in 2 or 3 posts xd

When I'm given a project from a client without word constraints, the final article is so much better as a result. I think people figured 400 words was easy and fast enough to write that it hit a sweet spot for them. Producing massive amounts of content was seen as easy for these website owners.

Personally, I'm a firm believer in creating content that is the appropriate length for the subject matter. Sometimes, my articles are 2,000+ words and other times I'm done with the subject in a concise 350 words. The great part is that both will rank well for my clients.

400 words is the perfect amount of works, if an article has 100 words you prolly wont spend too much time on the page, if an article has 400 words you'll stay on the page and you'll be an active reader. Would you rather read a 400 word essay or a 800 word essay?

Because people aim for the bare minimum. And people offer services providing the bare minimum.
My articles range from 500-1200 words.

ThopHayt didn't mean that having a 400 word article by itself is not a footprint, but consistently having articles that are 400 words can be seen as one.

FYI, If you read the blogs regularly outside of SEO Niche( Possibly the personal, Hobby, Gadgets niche) you can still see lots of articles in the word range of <300 too with lots of images.

Some posts with just 100 words is not surprising. If you want to be natural, I suggest to go for small blog posts in the tier 1 with just photos and small amount of text which describing the situation related to the photo.

If you started writing article with numbers in mind, You may very well end up in producing crap articles.
