Here is my dilemma. I have spot 3 & 4 for a keyword, I get good traffic(1/5 of exact GKT number). People who search for this are basically looking for information about what they are searching. Spot 1 & 2 belong to wikipedia.

Basically I wonder if anybody was able to outrank wikipedia on these positions, did you see significant traffic increase? I have a feeling that outranking them may not be worth it, since most of them will be clicking on wikipedia links anyways.

    What you think?

As you already stated people who are typing the keyword mostly interested in information. Google adapts search results to each person, and when most will prefer wikipedia Google will act to improve the position of wiki page. This no matter how many backlinks your website has.

So as long as you're sure that information (=wikipedia) is what people are looking for, it is a waste of time and resources to try and outrank it. Much better will be to redirect them from wikipedia to an extended source of information (which can be your website).

I'm in the same position #3 under two wikipedias with a pr0 domain.... not fun at all trying to get past them. I've decided to hold the 3rd position and move onto other keywords now. :)

I've done it for a keyword in portuguese. was easy.
I managed to drop the link to my site in their page that was on 1st place and i mean on the article body, not on the links at the bottom of the page.
That and some more links and now i'm 1st and they come after my site.
Not telling you the keyword but i can say it's related with music.

One of my sites was outranking Wikipedia for a good while on google.co.uk for a commercial search phrase. I have a link on that Wikipedia page under the "External Links" section. Haven't been building links to my site for a while. My site dropped to page 2.
