So I was checking my stats for my blog today, and noticed this strange url sending traffic my way: hxxp://r-e-f-e-r-e-r.com/mysite.com

So I clicked the link to see who was referring me and why they had my url in their link and I come up to a page targeted just for me with a little sales letter welcoming me and trying to sell me their services. Is this a sneaky advertising method or what? Make a url with their name, give it a few clicks so they'll see it in their analytics when they check, then try to sell them their product? The site didn't look good, and it didn't look reputable anyhow. It claims it's using 'referrer spam' and that it's not against the law. I don't like their tactic anyhow.

    Anyone else encountered this?

Clever, I see how that might work. You'd have to be offering very specific services I suppose.

I've never seen it before though. I don't check analytics often though.

Referrer spamming is one of the oldest web spamming techniques. Back in the day (early to mid 2000s once people had worked out how to manipulate SE ranking schemes that were based on link popularity) people used to referrer spam like crazy and have multiple boxes doing it, getting backlinks from open referrer lists, open webalizer logs etc. One of the most drop dead simple backlink generation techniques and it used to bank hard. Of course like all simple techniques it got abused en masse, most sites closed their referrer logs so you couldn't get spiderable backlinks from them, and the SEs devalued links from referrer lists and log pages. These days you still see a bit of it but it's mainly aimed at getting clicks from webmasters clicking their own referrer logs; similar to the technique of getting spammy comments deliberately trapped in the WP comment moderation queue and using them to advertise products to website owners, rather than trying to get backlinks.

Back in the day lots of analytics softwares(webalizer, etc) would be left without password so referrer spam was actually effective at some point. Then everyone switched to client-side trackers and the log analyzers lost popularity.

I wasn't aware I had any competitors lol. I don't rank for much of anything. I just assumed it was a dirty tactic to get me to buy their service. At least they could have made their page look better and more reputable.
