"7 Lessons Learned From Running An SEO Agency"

    http://moz.com/blog/7-lessons-learned-from-running-a-seo-agency-14225

The article says things like "I had a strict rule: if you couldn?t pay me at least $20,000 a month on a one-year retainer, I wouldn?t take you on as a client." and "It took me a few years to learn this, but once I did my minimum SEO engagement started at $240,000 a year and it went up to $1,200,000 a year."

What kind of companies is this guy selling to that would pay $20,000 per month on SEO or Pay-Per-Click? Here I am selling to 5 dentists who pay on average about $700 per month each. I don't understand.

By making his services limited and exclusive like that, he actually managed to get some pretty big fish out of the corporate sea. I never forget what he did to TechCrunch, they wouldn't be here at this level today if it wasn't for Neil.

I'm going to start a BST selling dice to people who follow the dentist method word for word - there's clearly an endless supply of customers.

Ive read his blog for a while now.

Look at his client list and you will understand. He isn't a small fish at all. I read an article where he said he's spent over a million in links in his life.

    Crazy

this guy knows what he is doing. I don't go around backing up "Gurus", but every marketing ( not necessarily Internet Marketing) person can learn a couple of things about this guy. Just read him between the lines.

Yes, this guy is not fake at all. He knows what he is doing; he worked hard to get where he is and I'm guessing he can set up his own rate, even though this is definitely really high.

What you need to know; everyone use internet nowadays. Big companies need real experts that will put their websites to the top and make sure they stay there. That's why they hire guys like Neil, a true experts in SEO.

I don't agree with his thinking on only dominating a single niche, imho its better to start dominating other niches as you grow.

Amazing. I've heard a lot about Neil Patel and I can assure you he's not the kind of guy you want to underestimate. He's one of the most respected bloggers and SEOs on the web.

I'm currently doing the opposite of what you suggested; I started off with offering (and still offer) SEO for clients in different niches, but now I'm leaning toward specialising in one specific niche (possibly lawyers or brokers). The reason I did this was because, at the time, I wanted to avoid having clients who were competitors with each other (which, as you may have already guessed, would cause problems).

At the same time, I can see why it's better to dominate multiple niches, especially since this will provide you with a larger client pool. :)

I think the idea of not working for peanuts is an idea that many here would do well to become acquainted with...

I don't say that to be disparaging.

I simply make the point that it takes exactly the same amount of hours to earn $500k a year as it does to earn $25k a year. In fact, almost certainly it takes fewer hours.

So choose your focus, folks - choose your focus well.

An upside of dominating a niche is that you can send a cold email per the below, and almost always get a 100% response rate:

    Hi Joe,
Fred Smith from YourCompetitor has worked with me for 8 months, and I've added $600k to his turnover.

I can do the same for you. Should we have a quick chat Thursday?

I put my own money up to deliver the results.

    Regards
    Zwielicht

That way, they know who you're dealing with, and there's always something more personal about someone you know (or know of) acheiving the results - even if they're a competitor or quasi competitor.

Hey, I like that! I suppose I can start specialising in SEO for lawyers considering that there are 3 law offices with outdated websites 1 mile away from me (there are 21 law offices within 5 miles) and my lawyer client who lives in another state is willing to reference me.

Thanks for sharing that, tony_d! :)
