In a 2 day long argument with one of my writers over whether or not the fee comes out of my end. I paid them $2, and they received $1.80 after odesks fee and are mad as hell.

So who's end does the fee come out of, theirs or mine? The rest of my writers have not complained at all.

The employer has to pay the fee. You can negotiate with the contractor to lower the cost but you have to pay the odesk fee (11.11%)

oDesk explicitely put that they get 10% of the payment so if they bid $2 then they receive $1.80. It's not oDesk's fault if people don't read this kind of stuff. I believe it's part of the oDesk Readiness test.

I've been on oDesk for 4 years and have earned FAR MORE than programmers here in the Philippines (though I pride myself that I am providing quality services as I have no complaints ever since and a regular client for more than 4 years now)

I usually pay all odesk fees. I'f i'm happy with the person I'm working with I then work with them outside of oDesk and save the fees.
I was scammed by a writter from there once and oDesk did nothing about it until I told them my credit card company would pull back the funds. No point in complaining over 20 cents.
