I am building a buffer site that has only related content to my niche which is Carpet Cleaning.. I want to know how far outside the handful of Carpet Cleaning industry niche backlinks I can reach before google decides that my site has non niche related backlinks? Can I build any links to it, or do they have to be niche related?

    Hello,

What I say may not be the 'truth', but it is my opinion and should be treated as such.

From my experience, Google doesn't care that much about relevant links. I've ranked dozens of websites with totally irrelevant links, and they ranked just fine. Honestly, I would have wasted 5 times the amount of time looking for relevant links, while I could have actually been backlinking.

Obviously, try not to get links from pharmacy or po*n sites. Other than that, you should be okay.

Relevancy is determined by the site/page your link resides on. Are your keywords in their domain, page title, meta tags and text within the body? Is the page your link appears on linked to internally and externally with anchor text using keywords you want to rank for? These and other factors come into play to determine relevancy.

Obtaining links from niche related sites compared to unrelated doesn't seem to matter. What matters is the quality of the links that you're building. Acquiring few high quality links from non-related niche is better than having lots of low quality ones from niche-related sites.
