SEO or search engine optimization is quite a tricky subject. It will take you days to completely understand it or even years. Your best bet is to get some fairly good WSO or course that is made for newbies. It will not teach you anything that you can't find on the web but it will be a short crash course that will get you started.


I would recommend source University which I found really good for complete newbies. After completing that you can search on blackhatworld and read posts by valuable posters.
