I believe we require your definition of "legitimate," if a 4-page site that is making money is not "legitimate" in your eyes.

I think what you mean is a site wherein it is not optimized for monetization and is purely informative and stuff?

    I have one.

Any site that is indexed is legitimate. If it makes money then it is a keeper. If it is no where to be found in the SERPS and isn't paying it's own hosting then.....

Mine is as legitimate as it gets, it doesn't even sell anything directly. I'm just trying to rank my photography site to beat the other guys in my area.

im sorry i am anew. what i meant was... i see a lot of people creating these micro sites for 4 pages targeted to a keyword, stuffing with adsense and hoping to make money with t hem. making like 50 of these.

myself, i have been running a blog for 2 years now, just recently started actively including SEO and backlink services.

i write my own content - its a how-to site- and am trying to build a real business with it. not just fly by night sites. I've found that my original articles that are not even optimized for keywords are bringing me lots of traffic - which is weird...

so who else is doing that type of business on here instead of quick rich stuff?

You are still degrading something that many people find success with here. No need to do so.

I have a 700-page website of 100% unique content, videos, audio and so on. It did cost me 10k to make and five months of my time, but it has been 100% worth it :)

I'm in the process of doing the same. Website coding is almost complete, not it's time to start creating some great content.

kind of like the ProBlogger Darren guy. he's famous for blogging and runs a few sites that have got him there.

I wouldn't be surprised if 'legitimate' websites are or did deploy some sort of 'illegitimate' tactics.

In my opinion it's being unique. Don't do what everyone else is doing, and instead find a problem and create a solution.

I went live with my newest site less than 2 days ago, have 30+ members looking to spend money, 260+ unique visitors, hit over $100 in sales in only a few hours before closing the testing period, all while not even being indexed yet. How? I made something people wanted that noone else has made.

    Be creative, and unique.

I have a few ecommerce stores. These are beasts and legitimate, and full of unique content. My heart & soul has gone into them.

This might be useful for some: two of my sites made first page for for a competative niche very recently with only onsite optimization, unique content and a bit of contextual blog commenting.

Thanks Panda, looks like whitehat is the way forward - for now.
