I am just curious because a dedicated server provides tons of advantages but I still see many people using shared hosting and am trying to figure out why "big shot" money makers aren't settling down for a simple dedicated server which would provide more flexibility in traffic, web apps, etc...

In short, does anyone here have their own dedicated server? Owned or Leased, if so - post specs!

I have a dedicated server.

My dedicated server is a owned by me server
2x2400mhz AMD processor.
1gb memory, need to upgrade this part.
100mbit dedicated line without any transfer limit.
250gb disk.

But all my cloaked pages are on different shared hostings because if they get banned I just buy a new domain and continue.
But if my dedicated server gets banned at IP level as it is easy to see that all sites on that one is mine, it would not be so good.

I own 2 deds and 1 vps. It just depends on your purpose. If youre purpose is just for simple landing pages and things like those, a shared hosting will work for you.
I am using my servers for some softwares that eats up a lot of bw and memory/cpu resources though, thats why I need them.

How much do you guys pay monthly for it and who are your providers?

I recently bought a Power Edge 1550 and plan on using it as a home server. My home connection is plenty enough to pop up a few Medium-Traffic wordpress sites. Still waiting for my SCSI hotswap drives to arrive

I use my dedi on my home line that has 100mbit x 5 .

So I have 100mbit on each IP separately.

the upstream on each is between 20-100mbit depending on the time of the day, but never lower on each IP.

Sweden baby, Sweden.
Hehe.

Some areas like mine has fiber lines coming to each house or flat.
Then each line gives 5 ips and 100mbit dedicated lines.
Sometimes you get limited upstream to 10mbit, but anyway its not bad either I can tell you.

So basically if you would have access to the switches in our area or routers I guess the speed could be even higher.

i have a vps at dreamhost that i can't recommand to anyone :( however i saw 2 offers that i liked: the ones with 4 Gb ram and 10 Tb at 10tb[dot]com and choopa with unlimited traffic, but small hdd. i think i'll get one of this in few months.

I got some from webhosting talk ;) 1gb ram so quite shit processor 750gb hd... unlimited traffic at 10mbs port ? might upgrade 100mb if needed hehe uploads 3mbs to enough for me

mostly uploading vids since i got 8/1M and upload aprox 30kts might buy 120/2M soon since they are supplying now :D only weird thing is that at our school i think is 10/10 since it uploads like 300kts who knows.

I had servers. Now i have given up on them.

i personally think VPS is best. you don't have to manage problems and you can easily shift if there is a problem with hosting. you also have everything just like a server.

Yea a VPS does seem like the best solution since you can switch between them really fast and it doesn't have to be a long term settlement

You do have to find yourself a reliable provider though

so far i don't need a dedi-serv, but it would be preferable in some ways.
especially when blocking spammers from overseas places. someone told
me that i should get a d.s. for the many advantages.

on the other hand... i do have my own custom file managers tho, and they're great. :D
i can create, edit, and preview files online; zip, gzip, and untar files in my account;
move & copy dozens of files at once, etc. they're better than c-panel. :D
