Those fake tech supports were trying to scam him $350 for their fake service, so he punished them with that ransomware, he didn't do it for profit.

Older people. In my city there's quite a bit of rich people. On the news there was this story. These scanners call you saying you didn't pay your taxes. So right of the bat you know it's bs. But now only that but they literally say go to the convince store and buy 500$ iTunes gift cards. Like wtf who falls for that shit. But poor old people will believe that and they are gullible and don't know better.
One person ended up paying them 7000$ and 2 more payed over 1000$

If someone techy enough to know what a "BSOD" is then he is smart enough to know they are spams. So what's the point of those emails?

The sad part of the story is that they (Indians) genuine think they work for Microsoft. They don't know it's a scam but of course their boss knows.

Tons of them, people who don't understand the computer and think every web page is something authentic, often get scammed by such popup/pop unders. The FTC has put up several notices and made many changes the way someone can advertise stuff but yet people manage to get it to those users by various methods
