I'd go with blender to start, and once you get the basics and the hang of it, move towards 3DS. I have used that and maya in the past. 3DS is the way to go. See if they still have a student promotion.

    What industry?.

    Games? 3DS.
    Animation/movies? Maya.
    Motion Graphics? Cinema 4D.
    Hard Surface models? Modo.
    Free because whatever? Blender.

Other tools you'll probably need to learn anyway: Mari, ZBrush, MudBox, TopoGun...

Cinema 4D is the easiest to master. Blender got impressive rendering results. Rhino is for jewellery designing. 3Dmax was good when in versions 3 to 6, but not after that.

    So is the learning curve.

For ease of use I would go with Modo, Cinema 4d or 3DS Max
