I have been an affiliate for some time promoting products like Wordpress themes, plugins, domain name and other website related products etc. I have been always wondering who are the buyers and what are they doing with their websites. For me I need a website so that I can become an affiliate and promote things. I don't think my customers are affiliate though. I want to understand this so that I can better cater to my potential customers.

What in your opinion why do people need a website? I have a few answers but can you share yours here too?

    1. They are affiliates, building website to promote products.
    2. They are local business owner, who wants to own a presence online.
    3. They are online store owner. They engage in e-commerce activities.
    4. They are individual who wants a portfolio website.
    5. Big corporate
    6. Community based organisation like church and neighbourhood, and forum
    7. ..... your thought please?

    Thanks!

These are some of the reasons why someone or a group of people might need a website:

    1. Affiliate marketers to promote products.
    2. Local businesses for advertising purposes.
    3. E-commerce store owners to display products.
    4. Photographers to display their art.
    5. Corporations either to advertise or display their products or services.
    6. Offline Communities to keep their members up-to-date.
    7. Musicians to sell or display their songs.
    8. Personal bloggers to rant.
    9. Brands to promote.
    10. Serial killers to display their work.
    11. Nonprofit organisations to raise awareness.
    12. Online communities need one as it is imperative.
    13. Government entities to seem modern.
    14. Political candidates for advertising purposes.
    15. Individuals with hobbies to showcase their work.
... And the list goes on.

Thank you for the prompt reply.

Which group of people in the 15 above do you think has the most quantity?

Yes the list does go on but sometimes I'm confused with the presence of social media like Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter and forum etc, why do they need a website anymore. Because to maintain a website, it needs effort, a lot of them. Besides coding, you need to know UX, then come internet marketing (SEO, on page, off page...) etc; whereas Facebook is an audience-ready platform. It's easy to engage with users too. If I were a local business owner for example a plumber shop, I don't think getting a website is efficient.

While for photographer, isn't it more effective to maintain their portfolio in flickr?

    Ponder..

Local bussiness without websites would be your best bet.

You can charge $500-$1,000 for a website and then get them as SEO clients for a few hundred a month.

    Definitely #10. :joke:

Targeting local businesses would probably be one of the better options since there are still many of them that do not have a website (or they have a poorly created one).

In the case of local businesses, a website has become an expected thing , so many businesses will create one. Other people may want a website as something that they can customise and call their own on the Internet. Besides that, there are some people who may not like how their content easily gets lost or forgotten about on social media, so they will create a website where they can better organise their content.

As for why a photographer would want a website if they use social media, some people like to have a website as a "base" on the Internet similarly to how musicians will want a website and simultaneously sell their music through iTunes.

    haha.. the serial killer! :lmao:

Yup.. I do agree with the local businesses. What do you think about their education level? I mean, internet world education. If I were to target them do you think they have already known about how the Internet world works or can they be totally off the grid?

My thought is that they should have something in mind about the Internet but as of marketing it & getting leads, they might be still clueless, let alone on-page & conversion optimisation etc.

How about bloggers? I have seen a sharp decline of bloggers however many competitors around my niche is still targeting this group of people. It does make sense for local business to blog but how about other type of blogger - blog for the sake of making affiliate money or for hobby purposes. Can they be a good bet in your opinion?

Social media is a good distribution channel. However, it is a very bad sales channel. In most of the cases you need a website if you want to sell. This especially when it comes to local businesses.

since people shop online, every business needs one. you should see the crap-o-rama web sites being run by some of the local business owners. there is nothing on the page that would help them get clients. not even a contact form!

i was thinking of selling them web sites but that area isn't for me.
