I've been successfully doing whitehat SEO for over 15 years. None of my clients have suffered any affects from Panda or other updates, in fact, it's only helped their ranking. So I've never, ever looked into Blackhat - although knowing it exists - as my results have always been excellent otherwise.

But - I just took on a new client whose situation is dire. This guy's site was at the top of his game 2 years ago - but the SEO firm he was using did absolutely NOTHING and by the time he let them go and hired me, his business is tanking big time. In fact, his site now has nearly been driven into oblivion, as the competition is not only smart but pawningly fierce. He can't go another couple months like this or he is going to hit the pavement. So time being my enemy, I know there is no way I am going to save his company on whitehat SEO alone - it just takes too damn long. I've got to do something that will give immediate results.

I'm willing to step over to the dark side a bit, to get the results that will make him solvent, but without killing his business later. So what the heck do I do? I'm at a loss when it comes to this kind of strategy.

You cant play this game without seriously risking his domain. Either get on adwords for a quick fix or do things properly.

Whitehat is pretty much an oxymoron of itself.

I think the line between black and white continues to grow ever more murky. Semantics are a funny thing.

Even with black hat, you wont have imediate results and if you do too much you might be penalized.
    Is it a e-commerce website ?
If so, the best solution would be to send mass email, promoting some good products on the website.
    - To begin, your site might already have some customers, so you can send them emails
    - You can make a new targeted email list
    - You can buy an email list (i can sell some but it's french customers)

You can also buy trafic here or from fiver (not a very good ROI but it can help, depending on the products you have to sell)

And if you client has some cash, you should try adwords for some time ;)

Using Black hat technique, can have immediate results if you know how to play the game.

Read the OP post properly: "competition is not only smart but pawningly fierce"

To purchase one of those sites would be pure white hat :)

    Absolutely.

OP, wtv you do dont risk his money site. Buy a couple of domains, use public blogs (such as blogspot, squidoos, etc), look more into youtube videos for example and go get em!!! spam the shit out of it and see whats works. Focus on low searched keywords but do it in masses.

You can't DO white hat, as @GetDOWNnandDIRTY said. Whitehat means natural so you wouldn't be doing anything really. You were doing grayhat, and stepping over to more automation is what you need right?

Thanks for all the great input. You guys are dead on about whitehat - greyhat is way more accurate. There is a mention of public blogs - does that mean posting links on them? I've noticed some on this forum have had good results from blog commenting services where a link is planted. How risky is that, really? If I started with just 5?

What is whitehat SEO? Build websites and hope people will come? lol

The difference between whitehat and blackhat is simple - those performing whitehat SEO are lying to themselves when they buy/build links.

To the OP - stick with what you know best and stay "whitehat" as you say. It's not your fault the client did not fire the previous SEO company sooner. Good luck

Why not try some of the services here in the BST? The Ranking Guys, Hybrid SEO, Nexsus 2.0, Big Buddy's Katona, I can vouch for all their services. They sure give you a +ve SERP movement.

Succumb to the darkside... of course. Just don't get caught

PS. For the people who keep saying there is no such thing as white hat.. do you do any of this?

keyword optimizing your page titles, meta tags, h tags, canonical url tags, writing quality content, building white hat backlinks manually, rss feed, submitting your sitemap .

I really disagree with anyone who says white hat is dead or not useful or doesn't exist. If you haven't done your white hat optimization, then your (black hat) link blasts etc.. are going to be far less effective. Quality before quantity..
