Try to to build some backlinks to your site, but read up a bit on the Panda/Penguin updates and what type of links you want.
More powerful the site you get a link from, the better. Therefore, Government, charity, high pagerank/strength sites/blogs, news, education etc are all good sites to get links from
Maybe consider paying a PR team to get you on news sites.
Learn about the important of anchor text as well before you start, focus on branded anchor text or phrase anchor text rather than exact match anchor text.
Oh, and make sure you DO NOT build sitewide links. By this I mean you want the link to feature only on one page, preferably the Homepage, otherwise the effect could be more detrimental than positive.
