being a victim of identity theft myself, I think its a step in the right direction. Not sure how the government is attempting to control the internet with an opt-in system...

    All I can say is,

Can anyone name a single program that the U.S. Government controls, that isn't over-regulated, over-controlled, over-budget, or completely f*cked up in some manner or form?

And now they want to get into the internet game?

Give it a year, and it will be fubar.

LOL you seriously believe this will be "opt-in" forever? They will simply tell sheeple like you that it is opt-in. But require all businesses to use it for their websites. This will in turn force the entire internet population to "opt-in", as you say, just to use any website.

I don't think this is intended to be the foundation for a modicum of control over content and activity.

Rather, this is the first step in implementing widespread, transaction-based taxation. You can't tax transactions effectively until you can track the parties involved. I believe this will be above an beyond any sales tax.

I agree that it is unlikely this will be opt-in for the long term. Eventually, I believe that you'll need some form of identification to buy or sell anything on the internet.

The days of anonymity and individual privacy for the average person are numbered.

Ya, good point actually, I was wrong. The government is loosing tons of tax money to online purchases. This will be a great way for them to get a slice of the pie.

I wonder if this will apply to other countries as well. I believe here in NZ that would be breaking privacy laws already set here...

Also, am not sure if my thoughts are correct but does anyone think the US Government is looking at using this as another method of boosting revenue? I know the US has a huge amount of debt (something like 14 trillion and growing) so I guess they have to try every avenue for making more revenue they can. If this was to happen on a large scale I wonder what effects this will have on BH SEO...

One of his points was over budget. The USPS is losing a lot of money and has been trying drastic stuff including closing many post office locations.

Thats because the vast majority of bulk mail is moved via FedEx and UPS, who are private companies and have their shit together and know how to get the job done. The USPS contracted to them in a money saving move, and still, USPS is way over budget.

Ah, the FDA. The same bunch who told us that Red Dye #3 causes cancer. What they neglected to say was, you literally had to consume roughly 5,000 pounds of Red Dye #3 a day to get the equivalent levels that was being tested on lab rats.

I deal with FDA inspectors daily, I haul milk for my day job. The majority of them that I deal with are incompetent, and could care less. They are just riding the government gravy train, marking time until they can retire with full benefits.

to be very honest, this will happen in every country, im quite sure of it. It's just matter of time. Probably in the US they will do it sooner than in other countries though..

When one industry makes a lot of money and it keeps growing, the government will always want to get a slice of pie from it. :chicken_w

After all, we all know internet is global. You can buy from far east to far west. They won't let some anonymous person buy from US "verified" internet store all the time. It'll happen, like it or not. I don't see it will happen anytime soon though, maybe in 3-5 years it will go global.
