Just Joking - but there is some truth to the statement.

You may recall my little drama's back in February with the dreaded unnatural links letter from the big G. I won't go too much into that only to say I lost over 30% of my business overnight.

As hard as it is to believe that disaster turned out to have a silver lining.

I no longer spend the vast majority of my day doing mind numbingly boring link building. I used to hate what I did whenever I actually thought about it, because pretty much all link building for ranking purposes is just pure pointless spam cluttering up the internet for no reason other than my own selfish ones. I know and understand that I was just playing by the rules G made, and if I didn't I wouldn't be able to rank. But it still kinda shitted me.

Since losing my main KW, which was responsible for over 30% of both my traffic and income, I've had to do things a little bit differently. I AM NOW ACTUALLY ENGAGING MY POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS to drive them to my site. And it feels good. And it's working better than all the auto spam ever was.

Sure, my 2-4 hour workday has grown to about 5 or 6 hours now, and I still spam the crap out of my other keywords, but getting referral traffic from other sources is not only directly helping people but building a sound base for my business. It's building relationships with past present and future customers that I never bothered with previously. It's also increased the sites daily earnings by almost 50% with less actual traffic than I had before, if you can believe that! And at the end of the day - I feel good about it.

I won't go too much into my methods, as they're pretty niche specific, only to say I'm now even heavier into social media and niche specific forums than I used to be.

Shifting your dependency from Google can only be a good thing. Its not necessarily white hat though, it can be if you do it properly. Others can say what they want but the net is more and more social and if you bend yourself to that breeze, it will definitely help you. The thing is its more difficult than firing up Xrumer and shitting 10 000 links in a few hours, so this will go over most people's heads.

Nice to see that you are now focusing on referral traffic. I do not think that anyone affected with Google updates will now rely completely on it.

Yeah, I just don't spam anymore either...if you have a worth while business that is not affiliate marketing it is so dangerous to go the blackhat method...I have a brand I developed over six years and then I got into blackhat seo and was killing my seo efforts, like first page ranked #1 or #2 for over 147 different keywords, but that all went away after panda 3.3 (Feb 24, 2012 or was it 2011, can't remember now) and then penguin...i recovered from penguin after the first refresh, thank god for that b/c penguin took my traffic to zero...

i just add a shit load of 100% original content to my site on a daily basis and interlink everything wikipedia style, i almost said gangham style there...ha...

This is the second post I saw you talking about just interlinking your site. Is this truly helping you? I interlink my pages and it doesn't seem to help me that much.

How many pages do you have? and what is the quality of the articles? Spun content? Yes or No?

Further, what is your business model? E commerce? Affiliate marketing? Adsense?

Come on dawg, you know content is king!!! LOLOLOLOLOLOL

Seriously though, for the long term viability of your business it is good that you are engaging your customers.

This is a tough topic to engage with b/c it all depends on what your biz model depends on. What if you deal in providing high quality content packaged in an educational program and you can convert pages that aren't really money pages into paying customers?

There are so many variables to every biz model that it is hard to say this will work on your site or some other site...

Sorry I was speaking from a pure SEO standpoint and making a joke. Of course engaging content is essential to conversions, but not the say all end all to good rankings as Mr Cutts wants us to believe.

I agree with this 100%...content is not everything, but if your site is tailored to a niche audience, content becomes that more important...

Yeah man, i can agree with this too...it's so hard to know what exactly works and doesn't b/c we don't have the master blueprint to the google algorithm...everything is just our best understanding for what has worked for each of us individually and then google moves the goal posts and then we are all fucked...

Yeah, "building links to manipulate page rank" is my definition of blackhat seo and this puts every single website who engages in seo in the "blackhat" category...

this definition allows for no "whitehat"...whitehat does not exist!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
