If your just doing IM you don't need a big video card.

    What is your price range?

I just bought a Toshiba Satellite 17in with the same specs except for a lesser video card for about $600 at Sears. Just something to think about.

Quite frankly you don't need a good laptop for IM. I have a $400 HP laptop and it works great for IM. It isn't terribly powerful, its like 2.1 ghz and has a gig of ram, but I haven't had any times yet where I was wishing I had more power.

Go on ebay and get a cheap lappy, put the money you save into your im methods. You dont need something fancy for IM. Sounds like you want a nice computer and are using IM as an excuse.

I only use XP...maybe I'll like Windows 7 and move on, but for now the 3GB max of RAM will have to do (I will probably move on eventually as programs start to require more power and more required RAM).

Maybe I'm weird, but I'd take the Acer...I dunno why...I have just had 2 really good experiences with Acers and would continue to use them.

you dont want a laptop as your main station, you want a powerful desktop pc with 2+ huge monitors, a laptop should just be additional for times you cannot be in your office.

Totally agree with the poster above. You'll need a good machine and workspace.

I'd go for a mac pro with 2 x 24" monitors :D A laptop is just something you use when you need portability. For the 800 bucks you could easily get a great machine with dual monitors put together.
