i get godaddy domains within 20 minutes of purchase
it took me 40 minutes from purchase to have wordpress installed on my new domain....w/a few themes
so idk what your talking about with domains not on day of purchase

i have a few host companies i deal with, hostgator and site5 has been good to me I have a resellers account on just about everyone I deal with..
As far as BH'ing, I set up accounts even on free host and run'em to the ground.
I create accounts on my resellers and if any BH questions come into play i tell'em I'll look into it ASAP yadda yadda...

For hosting, I use hostgator to host ~6-7 websites and I've only ever had one problem with them (fixed in a few hours after I opened a support thread for it).
