Social signals for a noob. The following questions are regarding how the big g views social signals. I?m just trying to make sure that the plan I put in place is right.

    1) Does it matter if you get say 1,000 likes but no comments or do you need comments as well?

    2) If I get 1,000 likes on my fb page for a post that has a link in it to a page on my site, shouldn?t I also be getting traffic to my page from fb? I have g analytics.

    3)
If a page on a site has a fb like button, you can see how many have clicked the like button. It could be say 2,000.
When I go to their facebook page and look at the number of likes for the post that shares that page link, it will be completely different, say 1,000.
So which facebook likes really matter for goog and SEO? Is it the likes on the fb fan page or the likes on your site page or am I missing something?

    4) Does it really matter if you only have likes and no shares?

You should use linkposts, if you want to get social signals. (2) is right - if you create linkposts and get likes on it, they also will be shown on your website and it is a social signal. With 1000 likes on this post you should get a lot of traffic, but don't think about to fake it, it doesn't make sense.

The best social signal in my optinion is a share from a linkpost and/or a share on your website - in generell it's the same thing.

Google doesn't use social signals for ranking pages at all. But social media helps rankings in three ways:

    1) It may get a few quality links for you.
    2) It drives more traffic for you.
    3) It increase brand search. Traffic and user behaviors are important ranking factors.
