I want to start a seo company working on websites for businesses in a certain niche only. Let's say this niche is dentists.
should the SEO company be called something generic like "Amazing Marketing" or something specific to dentists like "Amazing Dentist Marketing" (I know Amazing is a lame word, just forget that part)
here is what I have considered so far:
If it's "Dentist Marketing" dentists will trust it more. They will think "this company knows how to market dentists"
However, they may also have a confidentiality issue. "this company is already in contact with my competitors and I don't feel comfortable working with them"

so what do you guys think, generic or specific? what are the pros and cons of each?

I'm not an expert at coming out with great names. But the obvious pros of coming up with a name like "Amazing Dentist Marketing" is that.

    Pros:
You will appeal to dentists more since it will appear that you only do SEO for dentists. They will pay more attention to you.

    Cons:
The obvious downside is that this is a double edged sword. You can't market to doctors and such because of the name. Hence when the time comes to expand, you will need to come up with another name for your target market.

I'm not really a fan of coming with many names for a company which does the exact same thing. Hence I generally only have one rule for coming up with names for companies. It has to 'stick'. A simple and unforgettable name works best in my opinion. Not something smart or witty.

I would not name it dentists or plumbers or electrician unless you are actually employing dentist or plumbers or electricians. An SEO firm is better to be named with something simple and sticking, like "Attracta" which is a big SEO company. Doesn't specify who's SEO you do, but sounds catchy and stuff.

It depends how big the target market is. If the target is dentists and there are a massive amount of dentists you could potentially do work for, then a targeted name will work in your favor. You could always start a parent website which has a non specific marketing name, and then branch off into specific child sites which have targeted names, domains etc. for the niches you want to go for. That would be a hardcore project though if you wanted to do it the right way. If I was you I'd just pick a non specific brandable name.

generic really gives that trust level especially in the social field, but in regards to seo marketing, I really cant say it would work...

    some suggestions maybe:
    dentistoutreach
    dentistbranding
    dentistidentites

somthin like that maybe dunno whatever....

Try a name generator or something, should start to get the mind flowing.

If course a name that has the niche in it will be best - because it lets people know you are a specialist in their niche.
the downside is that if you build a good business from it, you are tied to that niche, and would have to almost start from scratch to enter into another niche.

incorporate with something generic i.e 'nooby seo inc'

then, get a dba for each niche you want to branch into

    'nooby dentist seo'
    'nooby contractor seo'

    etc.

It's better to have a general brand name and if your have many customer which are dentists, let them write reviews how it helped them as a Dentist or Doctor to market. Like this you don't have just one dentists niche...
    Cheers
