Where would you start, black or white hat?

Newbie trying to figure this stuff out.

That depends on who's learning it. For most people, I'd say start with white hat. A large part of blackhat techniqes are white hat techniques on steroids.. correction.. on CRACK.

I don't even distinguish the difference between the two any longer. I just do what makes sense for the particular type of site I am working on at the moment.

Usually it's a bit of both. Also, BH & WH tend to compliment each other.

I would say you need to learn some basic SEO and php. Once you have that down then move on to the black/grey areas of SEO, such as auto link building, autogen sites, etc.

If you don't have an understanding of the basics you'll never have a clue about the other stuff.
