Hey guys! Here is the question I posted on Yahoo! Answers, but no luck getting an answer. Could anyone help me with getting sports (NBA) writers?

    Hello everyone!

I am an owner of a website related to the NBA news, predictions, opinions and such articles. Right now, we have ~25 writers and we just started paying them (paying only 10 best writers this month). Next month and on we will pay everyone who publishes 15 articles or more monthly. Writers will be paid $4/$5 per 1000 views.

Now I am wondering - where can I hire writers? I saw some elance websites, but most of the people there work for fixed price per an article. Why would I want to pay for an article which might not get even 100 views?

I know that $4 is low for starters, but the website is relatively new and that's all we can offer right now. Is there any website where I can find writers who are willing to write for the website with such earning system?

    Thanks and best regards!

    Thanks for the help!

You might want to change the approach from "finding writers" to "finding enthusiasts" - because it will be very hard to find really good writers that will write for such a low price...BUT...you might find some die hard NBA fans that will gladly contribute, and contribute often if you give them a platform to voice their opinion and be heard.

That approach will probably work much better for you.

Also, using this approach, don't say you are "paying" them - switch that to "rewarding" - example: "We are rewarding our top contributors (insert pay scale/etc)"

If you do it right you can find enthusiasts that will gladly contribute - and the "reward" will be an extra bonus for them.

It is a win/win - you will get some people that love to write about the NBA - and probably get much better quality writing as far as the topic goes, rather than someone who is just cranking out submissions to get paid.

    Good luck man!

Edit: Forgot to ask - is it general NBA, or focused around a certain team? Let me know and I'll try to think of some good places to attract enthusiasts from.

Hey! Thank you very much for your answer and your help!

Yes, you are right, I will have to change the approach. This was "fans-only" website so far and I have ~20 writers who write for free, but I decided to move it to another level and pay them. Of course, I cannot offer them a lot of money, so their ceiling is like ~$100 a month. I am definitely going to pay them more, but it will take some time until the website gains more popularity and generates more revenue.

It is the website about general NBA...it has a few sections and people, when applying, can choose the team they will write for. You can check it out here, if you are interested:

Once again, thank you for helping me out, I really appreciate it!

That's not really hiring writers -- that's a rev-share model that no real writers would buy into.

No writers are going to work that cheap (good ones at least) - but find Basketball enthusiasts that just want to contribute - not people who are looking to make money writing - but when you offer them a bit of a "bonus" then it is extra for them.

Win/win situation that way. OP gets good contributors. Lets face it...a true NBA fan is going to write much better than just a writer looking to make a buck - because they are going to express their love for the sport and expertise - and other fans will relate to that content much better.

A lot of the larger sites have people knocking their door down to contribute for free.

How much you can pay for an article of 500 words..? I think I can arrange good writers to you at lowest prices.

Cant believe you got so many people writing for a site that barely exists lol

I understand if a site is really strong and popular, you will most definitely find people interested in writing, but at a starting level, thats some sort of magic man. I mean, we talking about 20 people hahhaha, thats a massive amount to be working for free. Props man...
You must be a really good talker!

It is not really hard, people love writing and sharing their opinion to the public. They would all continue to work for free, but since the website started making money, I decided it would be nice to share some profit with them.

I would try searching for bloggers on specific teams. For example Blog:portland trail blazers.

skip through the first few pages until you get to the basic bloggers who are very much amateurs and not getting much traffic. Find one that is a capable writer that has a style that will suit your site.

Send him a message telling him you admire his writing style and passion. Tell him you run a high profile NBA website that is starting to go through the roof. Tell him that you want a regional contributor for every team and you would like him to be man who covers portland. Obviously its a non paying role but you can contribute as much or as littlle as you like. You will get your name in the byline as our Portland correspondant and your blog will be linked with a "John Dough can be found at www.blog.portlandtb.us etc.

Plenty of guys will say no but if you hit up enough people you will get biters. I havent researched this but Im pretty certain theres thousands of bloggers per NBA team and plenty of them will appreciate that you are offering them a chance to get more traffic.

    Great site and thread!

I am in a similar situation with an MMA / UFC News site that I set up a couple of months ago and I need to find guest writers to help me boost the amount of content I can add to my site.

I haven't had much luck finding any so far, but hopefully soon I'll be able to get some contributors, using the advice in this thread.

Thanks a lot guys and good luck with your projects!

I don't know if this model pay for view is standard, but it doesn't make much sense.

What does this achieve, a writer is not going to think, damn I need to write an amazing article because I will get more views! What gets his article views are only your traffic, his title, and your link building. You will have writers brainstorming on amazing titles with quickly written content, unless you want to go into deep analyzes and punish them for bounce rates lol.

Instead either just pay them for 400-500 words like everyone else because 5 dollars per hand written/unique article is already very low.

Or do not pay them at all and promise their article a 5 dollar bonus (or more something like an amazon coupon to make it more 'gifty') and a special feature for their article, like on a slider or sidebar.

My favorite would be a weekly 25 dollar gift card and feature on the website. This hits your 100 dollars per month budget, and is quite an incentive to write a great post. Now on how to rate those post would be a different ballpark. Say you have a team of editors you can just take a vote, but if you are voting by yourself you might get some 'upset' writers who think they earned it and think that you're biased. If the the latter is what you're afraid of, stick with 5 dollar rewards and just give them out every 2 days (75 dollar a month) and spread them out a little between writers.

Some writer competition is always good.
