Over the past 2 weeks direct traffic to one of my sites has skyrocketed. We are talking from the normal 30 visits, to 1,500 per day. I can't seem to find where I can get more data on this. Obviously there is no referral. But to find out if its just bot traffic, or what. How do I figure this out in GA? or maybe another tool.

The best way to get accurate results is to check your host stats, simply login to where you host your website and if it has fantistco script scroll down to website stats and have a look in that :) GA should also help a little but i would recommend clicky for your stats instead of GA. Hope this helps.

Yeah I was looking at Awstats. been awhile. Awstats shows like 10x as many daily visitors as GA does... does GA filter out most china/spammy traffic in their logs?

awstats still didnt tell me much, and it's weird, because i went to 'latest visitors' and direct traffic to the homepage showed nothing compared to 1,500 in GA.

I use GA, jetpack and slimstat for my wp sites, between those 3 i usually have a pretty good idea where my referral traffic is coming from. Sometimes i find GA not to be super accurat

May be scrapers, spammers or any other bots.

    Cheers

I had exactly the same last week. Over 1k unique visits aday for 5 days, you could watch it in real-time and some did switch pages after 30secs-1minute or so, so it could be real traffic (unlikely though). But now its all gone and traffic levels are back to normal.

    Home Page:
Awstats will show you the hits you're getting direct from the server logs, whilst GA will only show actual users that have javascript enabled (and thus can execute the tracking code). If there's a huge difference between awstats and GA, then it's probably bots or scrapers without the ability to parse/execute js.
