I recently uploaded a huge list of directory lists to submit your sites to. And

there's a guide around here for newbies sites saying you should do around

200 directory links per site manually. Is it worth it? Does it help?

IMO it depends on the directory that you are submitting to.

If it is a directory that has just links with only a title and description then i would not submit to these as IMO these are just link farms.

Now if you submit to directories that allow maps, customer feedback, more detail info about the listing address and so on then these are just fine to submit to.
