Lots of good life advice here for the aspiring designer. I used to teach at a state college for design. What blew my mind is that throughout the entire 4yr degree process, the 'business' class for graphic design was the very last course you took before graduating. Last! I thought it was bs not to tell incoming freshman the realities. I think it would cut the graduating class in half as they rethought their careers. That said, most graphic design students I had seemed to be pretty shitty at everything else, such as math, writing, etc. So maybe it was a good fit for them.
I'm only upset at myself for waiting about 5 yrs too long before jumping out of the game and moving on to greener pastures. As many others have said, it's a zero end game these days with logo designers a 13 per dozen and the agency route sucks balls for too many reasons to list here. Crap pay. Crap living. Crap retirement. Get used to it if you're going into graphic design.
