Where does ViralNova (and similar viral image sites) get images ? I know they are not originals (these are news/ trending stories, so how can they be?) Yet, they are being used without any credits ? without a ban from Google / adsense ?
    Any ideas ?

    (a) They are getting permission from copyright holders (i.e., send an e-mail and ask).
    (b) They are not getting permission, but they believe their use falls under the fair use rule (and nobody is complaining to Google).

Copyright law actually has very little to do with giving credit to the copyright holder. For example, I might copy 1 sentence out of a textbook, and that will likely be protected as fair use even though it is plagiarism. Or I could publish a book that copies each chapter from other books, while giving credit to the authors, which might not be plagiarism but which may violate copyright law.

I agree one cannot just use anything and credit it to be safe. However, there is no DMCA or anything on these sites and they are getting millions of visitors and no one - not even Google bothers about the image sources ? I doubt they have permissions , but who knows.

If no one cares + complains, it won't stop. Google is earning from their traffic so they'll need enough bad publicity for it to matter.

Ah so Big G has an issue only with smaller sites in that case which dont adhere to copyright laws. Kind of unfair.

Google is obviously unfair in more ways than this. But they never said fairness is their intention, they'll just scare some small sites away to convince everyone they're playing by the rules..rules that nobody ever wrote.

How will smaller sites grow into bigger ones if they keep abiding by these rules ? Well, some food for thought for sure...

It's pretty clear he is breaching copyright.

It isn't up to Google- they don't hold copyright.

His problem will come if he starts using lots of images from the likes of Getty, Reuters and the Press Association.

That said many big news sites blatantly disregard copyright and take it as a business risk.

I see a source for each photo. Is that enough?

Definitely not. I'm pretty sure this guy doesn't have an account with AP.

I can see some of his recent posts are credited however, that still doesnt give him copyrights to images.
I also think since his site gets huge traffic, other sites/ sources which are credited dont really mind the higher influx of visitors they get as a result of their images being shared. Its a win-win. Maybe thats the reason no one is complaining.

They take pics and so on from around the web, then there is a policy in the footer for the removal of copyrighted materials.

I know that because I use the same scheme on my viralnova competitor site thedailysmarter.com ;-)
